For all of us with two wheels also

I’ll definitely look, didn’t think about that!

I’m a member of the XL Forum for Sportsters. I’m not sure you’ll find any info there, though there are guys there who ride both.

But I’m thinking there’s probably a Buell forum out there somewhere.

They’d probably have leads on parts and places to get specialty repairs done.

Good luck on getting that pup up and running!

Make sure you don't skimp on the chest protector, boots and especially the helmet.

I'd potentially not be able to walk today if I hadn't bought a good chest protector.

I've taken the ambulance ride that I don't remember because I didn't wear my helmet once.

This.
I totaled a Saab 900 with my chest back in the day.
That recovery is still not complete nearly 40 years later.

A race buddy of mine swears by the Alpinstar tech-air 5, which is what I now wear every time I leave the garage.
He swears it saved his life.

Edit: they run WAY SMALL. I'm 6'2", 225lbs, not too fat, and I'm in a 3XL.

Today was the 48th annual Chicago Toys For Tots Motorcycle Parade. This was the third one I've ridden. Lots of snow happened overnight.

It's a 140 mile round trip for me. Normally, it's about an hour and twenty minutes ride to get to the start. Due to shitty road conditions it took two hours. I didn't even get coffee and bullshit time with any of the other riders. As late as I was, I should have been in the 3rd Tier of riders but the staff directed me to the back end of the 1st Tier as it was starting out. That meant I could get home sooner. Good thing, too, as the temp is supposed to plunge later and I still needed to clear both driveways.

With my late arrival, I didn't get many pics but I got some of the stranger rigs at the end.

Probably the driest guy on run.

Rode over to Camarillo airport for breakfast @ the Waypoint Cafe... GREAT food & worth the visit, then up the coast to Santa Barbara.
For the return, we cut across to Ojai & Fillmore before hitting the superslab back home.
About 400 miles.

And a short video along the coast:

Rebuild the starter day for the Ural.
2AHGNH8l.jpg

Started out as a repair of the starter mounted solenoid. One screw on the cap went AWOL and the other was ready to jump the fence. I had to desolder the wires to the magnet to get the cap off to clean the contacts. It was really nasty in there. Back together and put the starter back on the bike. No love. Pull the starter back off and and tear it apart. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought the starter had been fished off the bottom of a lake. The arm and field coils were coated in rust. All cleaned up up and back together. Magic now happens when I push the starter button. The solenoid now sounds like it would smash some fingers.

For grins, I looked at my helmet from last Sunday's Toys for Tots run. Yuck.

She’s a runner! New fuel pump and rebuilt injectors. Now it just needs to be spring!

Congrats and LOVE that exhaust note... Bundle up cupcake & take it for a spin... Doesn't look like you've got any snow on the ground.

I did take it for a spin, but if I want to ride straight roads I’ll ride the rolling recliner, not hunched in the fetal position. The canyons, even if they are bare of snow, have too much sand on the road until a good spring rain at this point.

The powerband is definitely different than the Harley’s. It has a pretty good midrange hit and pulls hard at the top. Wasn’t really expecting that.

Just wait until that front tire comes up on you.... Buell knew what he was doing IMO and for the era they were built in they were great bikes.

Already did on a, what I thought was moderate, 1-2 shift. The thing sounds really cool in the upper rpm’s. Gauges are kind of cloudy so couldn’t really tell with my crappy eyes what it was taching but I hit the limiter in 2nd. Definitely looking forward to hitting the twisties with it.

I completed another Polar Bear Ride today. 18F at the start and a balmy 19F when I got back to the groj. The goal is to ride at least 35 miles. This was my 14th and 9th on the Ural. I did 38.1 miles and did a couple of FOTO stops.

This is the farmhouse at the Garfield Farm Museum.

It's a working museum on a gravel road not too far from Chez Fromage.

I also stopped at a mural in Geneva, IL, honoring the Lincoln Highway.

I've been driving past this for years and never really noticed it until today. I've also driven on the bulk of the Lincoln Highway. I prefer the federal state and local roads over the Interstate system.

The wife was pretty stoked to be able to get herself and her brothers all on bikes at the same time so we did a day after Christmas cruise since it was in the mid 50’s.

Left to right, yours truly, wifey, bikeless bro-in-law on the donated Buell, bro-in-law youngest on his Kawi 650 we had just slapped new tires on. Short 75 mile, but fun ride with everyone.
