Catastrophic Loss Of Engine Oil

There aren't any oil ports in the head gasket to receive cylinder pressure. The top end is oiled through the pushrods.

Speaking of the top end,O.P. is there oil coming out of your pushrods? What is your oil pressure?
If it isn't the filter itself i would think a blockage in an oiling passage or stuck bypass in the pump. Swap the filter and check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge like this one.

Yep,cheap and easy way to check, especially if you have an 03-06.(fake oil pressure gauge)i don’t think I’ll ever use another FRAM.

Look at the angle of the filter sealing surface to the machined surface of the block. Its misaligned. Also the bottom of the filter is bulged. IDGAF what filter you're running, that would have happened with Wix, Bosch, fram, microguard, whatever. I'd bet good money the pressure relief on the oil pump is stuck, causing an overpressure. the pressure exceeded the rating of the filter, and pushed the filter downwards allowing the seal to bulge out the side. The filter failure is a symptom, not a cause.

I assumed my eyes were playing tricks on me. I saw that too, but figured it was too obvious. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Haha! Well, I was seeing that angle too but I don’t see any abnormalities with the old filter and they also thread on just fine (no force). I wouldn’t be able to tell you what number filter this is, but I do routine oil changes, and always have, since acquiring this jeep in 2016 and I’ve never had a filter problem related to the pitch of it.

I’m under the impression that it’s also a symptom. But I have a new filter on it and oil filled to the appropriate range. Just fired it up and that raspy noise was there. Then it transitioned to a loud ticking. No leaks, so I let it run to see what would happen (what’s the worst that could happen at this point in this situation?). The ticking started to fade and fade and noticeably fade even more until it was gone. So I’m shut down now to start up and see if anything abnormal happens on next start up. Oil level stayed the same and pressure looked good on the dash. I’ll take to heart the use of a mechanical gauge once I can get ahold of one. ASAP. This is ‘99 btw.

So do you think you hurt the rod bearings?you didn’t shut it off as soon as you heard the noise?

It was bent by the pressure. when the mounting provision yielded it did so unevenly causing the angle. It went on like any other filter I'd wager, nice and even.

Worst that could happen is a rod through the side of the block. I'd be very cautious about running that engine until you locate the cause of the overpressure and remedy it. That could be metal or other debris in the system causing the pressure relief to bind, and the ticking could be due to a plug in a galley or debris in a lifter causing the plunger to jam. I'd get a gauge on it ASAP. Do an oil change and see if there is any "glitter" in the old oil. problems with the oiling system tend to be catastrophic when they occur.

Next start up was smooth, no abnormal noises. Drove 150 miles without issue. Dash gauge read in normal range the entire drive. 1 fuel stop with another normal start up.

Just risked it for the biscuit. 👀 Planning on driving a little this morning if cold start up sounds normal to pick up a tester at harbor freight and conduct an oil change and inspection (WITH a non-Fram filter).

You might run a quart of transmission fluid for 15 minutes before the oil change.

Starts and runs fine today. Rod noise is a guess, a guess that I never made. I think all the evidence points towards tappet.

Will be draining and checking for metal. Then trying to cut my old filters when I can. Got a pressure tester that I’ll slap in too and see what’s up.

I’ve got this strange suspicion that my filter was loose. Doesn’t explain the bulging. But could potentially explain the blow out.

I’m hesitant to add anything to my crankcase besides engine oil.

It’s made to clean the engine prior to a change,it will not damage anything, unlike running an engine out of oil.
