Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ engine mounts

It just happened!

Watching along... I had an immediate RMS leak on a new Promar Engine long block. Did the replacement with the Anaerobic and I still have a weep...

And no - Promar wouldn't warranty - they wouldn't take the Jeep dealer mechanic's word - "What was his method to confirm it was the RMS" —- Went down a rabbit hole and just gave up to do a replacement try myself...

I must have gotten lucky but I used a mopar seal, anaerobic sealant and new oil pan gasket. It’s been leaking free for over a year now.

Two questions:

1. Which anaerobic sealant did you use? The one I've tried is Permatex.
2. Did you offset the seal?

I have a new Mopar RMS on the way, along with a new Fel-Pro oil pan gasket and Castrol conventional 10w30. On the positive side, the Fel-Pro oil pan gasket has never let me down.

Been several years since I did mine IIRC used Mopar anaerobic sealant and a felpro seal.

Also went by this vid for the install.

I followed this to the letter. I didn’t offset the seal but made the install too.

Used permeated sealer.

I did this all when I was gearing and installing arms and suspension so everything was out of the way and I took my time. I may have gotten lucky. My jeep has 93k on it. I have a valve cover gasket in case that was the problem too but no leaks so I haven’t messed with that.

This proved to be a bit of a challenge with limited use of my right arm, but I was able to get the new Rear Main Seal installed. I followed the write-up @Jeep05tj did to the letter and while I'm not claiming success yet, there is no sign of oil leaking after an initial 30-mile test drive. The only place I differed from his guide is I waited 48 hours before filling the oil. Below is a simplified guide from his write-up. Also, the picture supplied in the checklist, showing where to put the sealant, is from his write-up.

Jeep 4.0 Rear Main Seal — Checklist

1. Prep

  • Raise rear of vehicle so engine is level or nose-down (keeps oil away from RMS area).
  • Parts ready: Mopar RMS, plastic “shoehorn,” Fel-Pro oil pan gasket, chopsticks, brake cleaner, lint-free rags, compressed air, etc.
  • Clean work zone before opening anything.

2. Remove Old Seal

  1. Drain oil & remove pan.
  2. Remove the support girdle and bearing cap, being very careful not to let the cap fall.
    • Keep cap area clean; don’t drop debris.
  3. Push out upper seal using chopsticks—avoid metal tools.
  4. Clean cap + block surfaces with brake cleaner.
Tip: Chopsticks, cut in half, are strong enough to push the seal but soft enough to avoid scoring the crank/block.

3. Clean Upper Seal Channel (Critical)

  1. Cut 1"×1" lint-free rag squares.
  2. Wet with brake cleaner; push through upper housing using old seal as a ram.
  3. Repeat 5–10 passes until rags come out clean.
  4. Final flush with brake cleaner + compressed air.
Tip: Spraying alone won’t remove stuck grime—rag-push is the key.

4. Install New Upper Seal

  1. Use Mopar RMS.
    • Install upper seal, with seal lip to the front of the Jeep.
    • No offset.
    • No RTV on ends.
    • Make/Use plastic “shoehorn” to guide upper seal - make one if necessary
  2. Verify the seal slides without catching.
  3. Clean the bearing cap and install the new lower seal, lip facing forward.
Tip: Mopar lip contacts the crank better → proven success vs Fel-Pro/Victor Reinz.

5. Apply Sealant Correctly

  1. Apply moderate (thin, even) anaerobic sealant (I used Permatex) to specified bearing cap surfaces only.
  2. No RTV at seal ends.
Tip: Too much anaerobic can migrate under the seal and dry into grit → leaks.
1762443035446.png

6. Install Main Bearing Cap

  1. Clean bolt and block threads (brake cleaner + swabs).
  2. Hand-thread bolts evenly.
  3. Lightly tap bearing cap with wood block + mallet to seat. DO NOT tighten the bearing cap bolts until the cap is fully seated. Tightening the bolts without seating the cap can break the cap!
  4. Torque:
    • Bearing cap bolts to 80 ft-lbs
    • Support girdle to 45 ft-lbs. When tightening the girdle bolts, start in the middle, then work outwards.
Tip: Clean threads = accurate torque that doesn’t back off.

7. Cure

  • Wait 24 -48 hours before adding oil and starting engine.
Tip: Anaerobic claims quick set, but real-world cure takes time.

8. Refill & Verify

  1. Refill oil. (I used Castrol GTX conventional 10w30)
  2. Start + inspect at idle.
  3. Drive, heat-cycle, recheck next morning.
Tip: A dry seam after overnight cold soak = real success.

QUICK REFERENCE — What Works

✅ Mopar RMS
✅ No offset
✅ No RTV on seal ends
✅ Moderate anaerobic only
✅ Deep cleaning with rag-push method
✅ Clean threads + torque bearing cap and girdle bolts
✅ Full 24 - 48 hour cure

What not to do:
❌ Over-applying anaerobic
❌ Using RTV on seal ends
❌ Skipping channel cleaning
❌ Using metal punches
❌ Rushing cure time

After 250+ miles of varied driving, I have a very slight amount of oil getting past the new RMS. There's no dripping at all, but it didn't seal completely like I had hoped. Previously, I couldn't go 25 miles without oil dripping and running down the oil pan skid, so given how minor it is, I'll drive it like this and call it a win.

On the plus side the weather here has been fantastic over the last few weeks. It did finally dip into freezing territory at night, which meant the hard doors had to go back on!

This one is like an unplanned child, it just happened, and I'm going to love it anyway! That said, let's get started with the details! This Shale Green 2004 LJ, one of 309, was most recently owned by another forum member @jwilson2899 (Jeff). Before that, by a Nurse in Winchester, VA. Under Jeff's ownership he made some tasteful additions that were focused on creating a comfortable daily driver. Since this was a fairly stripped down model, with a single note horn, soft top, full doors, and A/C, Jeff added the following under his ownership:

- Color matched 1/2 doors, with mirrors
- Tinted full door windows
- Hard top, headlined and wired in for the wiper and defroster controls
- Factory Cruise Control
- Rubicon flares
- Alpine Double DIN Stereo and backup camera
- Subwoofer
- LED headlights and tail lights
- LED dash and interior lights
- JK-based (I think?) back seat, with built-in headrests
- BulletPoint cell phone mount
- Bartact front and rear set covers
- Quadratech floor and cargo mats
- Rocker rails/steps
- Mopar AEV RockCrawler Front and Rear bumpers
- Smittybuilt 10k Winch with Factor 55 Fairlead and Flatlink
- 2" lift
- Sock Moab wheels
- Falken Wildpeak AT3 tires 265/75R16 (SL)
- ZJ steering upgrade
- Single ARB compressor (under the hood)

At sale time, Jeff also included a few uninstalled parts, including:
- Parts for adding a transmission cooler and temperature gauge
- East Coast Gear Supply 4340 rear Dana 44 axles

Since acquiring the Jeep, here's what's been added/purchased:

Love it! I'm in Stafford so I'll have to keep a lookout for it when I'm in Warrenton.

After seeing what @Longwhitejeep did, I now have a @Fluxor hinge set, tire carrier and lower valance to install. I'm hoping this will help with my tailgate sag that happened after installing the 100+ pound spare tire.

Also ordered the Genright Flak-Jacket tub panel guards to go along with the Genright, standard, front fenders. Now that I've finally retired, these will get done over the winter and complete the tub armor.

Congratulations on the retirement!!

Lower valance is a cool product. Hinges are beef and I’m still deciding on long term spare mounting. Excited to see you progress on it.

There is an install video on the valance.

Your spare tire carrier came with a small plastic spacer. Make sure to use it. It is designed to space out the OE rubber snubber and provide slight preload on the bottom of the tire when the tailgate is shut. You guys have the valance so you will need to drill and tap a hole to mount the OE rubber snubber and spacer in that location. I would adjust the tire as close in as the possible and trim the plastic spacer accordingly. I usually have extras on hand. If you guys ever change tire a and rim combos and need another spacer just let me know. Be careful tapping the valance. Lube the tap and take your time and its easy. Breaking a tap in that location sucks. Ask me how I know lol.

Thanks!

There is an install video on the valance.

Your spare tire carrier came with a small plastic spacer. Make sure to use it. It is designed to space out the OE rubber snubber and provide slight preload on the bottom of the tire when the tailgate is shut. Are you Centering the snubber on the valance then or using the factory location?

My gate is also bent and cracked from the morryde so that is another reason I may leave it off.

The factory location works with both the centered and the OE offset options. If you have the valance you can put it in any location you like. Just make sure if you move it you move it far enough to not be in contact with the oe riv-nut. Early TJs don't have the lower rubber snubber. They would require a riv-nut installed, same deal you can place wherever seems to work best for your wheel and tire combo. The long button head in the kit is M6.

Congratulations on the retirement.

Hey Rich,
How about coming down to Windrock in March and joining myself & my son for a week of wheeling? Since you're retired and all now....

As much as I'd love to do this, due to family reasons, I've got some significant restrictions on being away for any extended period. I'll send you a message and see if there's any possibility of getting away for a couple days though!
