Trailer sizes

I’ve been using an aftermarket TPMS system on my trailer. It is not very elegant but I don’t mind the monitor on my dash when towing. I added the signal amplifier to ensure connection between the receiver and the wheel transmitters. So far after a small sample size of about 6k miles, has worked well.

And for the benefit of the OP’s original question, I’ve got a 20’ aluminum 10k car hauler dual axle brakes with a wood deck, just about 2,000 lbs. empty. Tows my LJ well and has room for anything else I may need to tow or some utility hauling needs.

That's pretty similar to the one I use for my travel trailer. Works great.

Good thoughts. An alignment issue would likely cause bad tire wear prior to a blowout, correct? No such wear was occurring - and I pay close attention given my history. I think I've now blown 6 tires. And given my experience I've checked the alignment of the axles, and they are true. I also thought it could be a rubbing issue, but no wear or contact marks at all on the inner fenders or the running gear.

I misspoke in my post above. The tires I run on the current trailer are not G's, they are F's (damned memory...), 12 ply. They are 15" tires at 95 psi, and the capacity is only 3k - the largest I could find for a 15" rim. The tires on the new trailer will be G's / 14 ply - 16" at 110psi, with something like 4400 pound capacity.

And one other item, I run over 1,500 miles one way when I head out to Moab. Every blow-out I've had has been deep into one of these trips. Never had a problem on shorter trips.

Hopefully better luck with the new setup.

My 10k 16' came with bias ply tires. For a reason I dont remember, when it was time for tires I switched to a radial. I went from zero tire issues to a separation every single trip. Went back to a bias ply and never had any more issues.

Yes, yes it does.

These newer diesels with the 10 speed transmissions really are amazing. Power for days and with the exhaust brake makes mountain towing breeze. I have a similar truck, it doesn’t really care what you throw behind it.

But a fuckin’ side by side?

🙂

When I had my 14k equipment trailer that I hauled the TJ on, I pulled it with my Silverado 1500 3.0 Duramax. The trailer and TJ weighed about 1,800# lower than it's Max towing capacity. It pulled it great and got 16-17 MPG running 75.

Since building the crawler hauler, I've now got a 3/4 ton Duramax for obvious reasons 😉. This grosses in at 24,895#.

I always start at the max cold PSI in the tires. These are 110 PSI. The highest I've seen the GM TPMS in the trailer tires read was 122 PSI and an internal temp of 130°F.

Soo... whats the obvious reason for the 2500? Whats the GCVW rating for that truck?

Im in the you do you safely towing with a diesel crowd. I have bumper pulled 24-26k and as much as 30k (GCVW) regularly with a diesel F350 CC dually.

Dig that set up. What does it weigh?

I haven’t had it on the scales in total but I’d bet 24-25k. Camper is 8,300 dry, 1,400 for the trailer, 1,300 for the SxS, 1,300 for the 2 Harley’s inside, 8,000 for the truck with me in it and full of fuel. So that’s 20,300. Add in another person and 2 dogs in the truck, 70 gallons of water, propane, gear, etc probably around 24k.

Whats the GCVW for your truck?

Im just asking :D I have exceeded it most of my life.

One of my favorite pastimes sitting around camp grounds is looking up peoples trailer weights vs the trucks they tow them with :D

I honestly didn’t know but looking at the trailer selector towing chart on ford.com it looks like it’s 23,500. So I’m right there.

The GCVW for the 2500 is 26k and some change. I'm over the rear axle weight rating with this set up by 500#. My 1/2 ton wasn't even rated for a gooseneck. I got tired of paying for hotels or cabins when we take the Jeep out.

I went with an 18' 10k equipment trailer with 83" between the rails. Fits the LJ nicely with about 4" clearance on both sides for the width. I could have gone with 16' length, but the 18' will allow me to pull something a bit larger if needed. 14' would be too tight for the LJ (for my comfort level anyway).

10k seems like the sweet spot for jeep or most std vehicle carrying requirements. 7k is just too close to tolerance, in my opinion. Especially if you don't get the load spread correctly , you can easily push the limits on one of the axles. 14k is nice, but overkill for my applications and a good portion of that increased load capacity can go to increased trailer weight.

Here's how I started out towing... After smoking TWO STaK's t-cases I had to get a trailer...

Had my trailer built and went to Moab with it

Towed my RNTH (redNeck ToyHauler) with my Ram 2500 to Moab and decided I needed a new truck

IMGP1961.jpg

Traded the Ram 2500 in on a Ram 3500 Mega cab dually

Then listened to the ex-wife and got a diesel pusher... Worst mistake of my life... Never should of gotten my new motorhome either...

But I LOVE how my 14' trailer tracks behind my tow rig. Doesn't matter if it's my truck or RV and it's the one reason I don't want to get a longer trailer. Now if I was getting a new trailer I'd get a 10K trailer 17' long with a 14' tilt deck. Want the 3' up front so I can crossload my motorcycle across the front.

This has gotten very popular over the last 5 or so years. You can't find a toy hauler RV that will support the weight of a Jeep.

We have friends who go that have diesel pushers. They are nice but they have nothing to drive when we go out to eat or get supplies.

The truck camper one is my brothers (35' trailer) and the 5th wheel (45' trailer) set up is a good friend's.

I'd built mine back in 2008 when they were still fairly rare.... Wish I'd built another one instead of buying my current motorhome... Hindsight is 20/20....

Love the Eagle Cap triple slides... It was going to be one of them or a Host if I'd built another RNTH... Will have to live with my current choice until the RV market recovers and I can unload this motorhome.

I like my little 14' trailer for hauling a TJ... Not sure if it would work so well for a LJ... And not sure if a longer trailer would track as well as this trailer does.

I have a 32’ gooseneck with 16’ stationary and 16’ tilt deck that I really want to build a self contained box camper that is easy to take on and off. Simple with a toilet, full size shower, small counter with a sink, bed and a fold down couch, that’s it. Raised floor in the bathroom for holding tanks with maybe the fresh water tank under the bed. Build a cabinet on the back of it to fit a small pellet grill and small Blackstone and line the entire roof in solar panels. Be a boondocking dream.

I haven’t grown the courage yet to flat tow my LJ behind my 5th wheel. The hitch is only rated for 5k so that’s pushing it. It’d probably be fine but I like my LJ, if something happened to the SxS I wouldn’t care but the Jeep is another story. So I need to figure out something at some point for camping with the Jeep.
