The official idiot driver thread

And then there's the "blinkies" - found everywhere. Usually they're a person who is following somebody too close, but either way they're either on the gas or on the brake - very bad technique. This is but one form of BFNAR, "Biffnar" - Braking For No Apparent Reason. I back off of these fools if I can't pass them. In fact, I've been known to pull off the road altogether and wait a couple of minutes to let the fool just get away from me. The constant brake lights keep me hyper alert even though they're meaningless (until they're not).

Never mind the idjits who just won't fucking GO when its their turn for a variety of bad reasons. Usually because they're waiting for it to be clear all the way to (insert name of town 50 miles away here).

Tell us how you really feel?

I see this a lot on the freeway to and from work. A car going at or below the speed limit with no one in front of it will just brake for no apparent reason. I was behind one car and started counting how many times the brake lights came on, got up into the teens in just a mile or so.

I get around those fools ASAFP. Their brake lites become meaningless, so if they suddenly brake for a real reason, someone behind them who has been lulled into complacency has an instant problem. The only other thing to do is pull over and let them get ahead of you a couple of miles . Brake lites cause an instant SA re-appraisal - I can't relax behind someone like that.

Yeah, I ain't driving right behind someone like that. The car was in an adjacent lane so I wasn't worried.

Mythbusters did a traffic experiment where they had cars evenly spaced around a circle going around all nice. Then they had one car tap the brakes. Shortly all the cars grouped up. Then they all just settled in to “stop and go”.

Around here if you're in the left turn lane when the arrow turns green the lead car will usually take enough time to stir their coffee and take a sip then carefully put it in the cupholder and finish their donut before turning. Then someone else will be looking at their phone and won't notice everyone in front of them is gone, then you lay on the horn, they look up, hit the gas and everyone else misses the arrow.

We have a very poorly designed intersection in out town. And people wouldn't go, even though there's a Green right turn arrow illuminated. So I had a sign made up and mounted it one afternoon when the cops were all busy with a downed tree.

You can read the whole story here:

That was over 5 years ago, so the statute of limitations has run.

The problem with left turns in the city is people just don't understand how it works.

1. If there is a green light you move into the intersection and make your turn when safe like we've been doing for 100 years.

2. If there is a green light, and the intersection also has a turn arrow that has not illuminated yet, or a flashing yellow arrow, don't wait for the green arrow, see rule #1.

3. If there is nobody behind you and you have entered the intersection there will be no arrow because you have already passed the camera or buried loop so don't sit there waiting for an arrow, see rule #1.

Dang that's fancy. I'm used to just sitting and waiting for timed green arrows for nobody.
