Hey all,

Backstory first: My old aftermarket radio had a capacitor blow and lost all backlighting, its a shame really it was an OE insane audio unit and had some cool features. To replace it I picked up an 06 OEM radio that was on my build sheet. I have a Tire pressure monitoring system using the 12v port that is on a switch (only has power when the key is turned to ON). I want to add a Radio to Bluetooth adapter so I can still listen to music off my PHOOOOONE.

Problem statement: I want to make the second 12v port (Cigarette lighter port) and make it switched so that it only has power once the key is in the ON position. Has anyone done this? How would I go about it? My electrical skills are as a good as Red to red and Black to Black. I can do Basic wiring and understand how switches work.

Considerations: I understand it would be easier to just unplug the adapter once the Jeep is off. My wife however may not remember this fact. (been through this before on our 02 impala.) I do not drive the Jeep as often as I would like so the fear of parasitically draining the battery is real and recognized. Yes I could buy a new head unit. I don't want to.

As always, Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Spend $120 on a pioneer Bluetooth head unit and wire in a usb power port where cig lighter is...cig power is switched on my 99?

It is switched on the 06 as well, I am conflating the Cigar lighter which on the 06 is on the left, and the Aux power port which is on the left and not switched. Yes I could buy a new head unit. Short answer is I do not want to and want to keep the OE look. Do not need USB power, The TPMS has that and so does the BT adapter I have.

Use the cigarette lighter power to trigger a relay to control power to the aux. Better yet add a bypass switch so you can select modes.

Yep this is the easiest solution. Power the new relay coil from the cig plug that is switched then just cut into the power wire to the unswitched plug and wire the ends to pins 30 & 87. (Get a relay that comes with a pigtail socket)

2 alternative options to consider:

1.) Use a 12v port splitter in the switched 12v socket which will allow you to plug in 2 (or more) items into the switched port (easily found on Amazon). The Bluetooth adapter and the TPMS unit together don’t likely draw enough power to overload the 12v socket circuit.

2.) hardwire the TPMS unit to the Jeep by tapping into a switched fuse behind the glovebox.

Would you need a relay, Looking at the diagram, you could just splice the switched power wire into the un switched power wire on the Aux port and that would suffice? I may be missing the point of the relay.

You could but then everything would be on that one circuit, unless it already is on the same circuit? I did not look at the diagram.

edit: took a quick look at the 2006 diagram, your switched outlet is on a 15 amp circuit and your unswitched is on a separate 20 amp circuit, so if you tie them both to the switched 15 amp circuit you will be giving up the separate 20 amp circuit and losing 57% of your total capacity..

These are great, you won't get 2 round sockets but you get 1 round and 3 USB plus a volt meter. I've been using them in 2 vehicles for 3 years now.

From the diagram, the Cigar lighter is tied fuse 18 and the Aux power is tied to fuse 17. I am not skilled in reading electrical diagrams so it may be the same circuit.
