Looking for some rec’s on a budget-friendly spare mount or bumper/swingout carrier. I don’t want complete trash, but I don’t want to spend $800 either.

I run 33x12.50 BFG KM2, and a steel wheel on the spare…. I’ve got upgraded MORryde hinges, and I have a cheap Rugged Ridge spare carrier - BUT - when I put my spare on, it pulled too hard on the upper tailgate for my comfort.

I’m ok with upgrading the rear bumper and carrier with a swingout if there’s a decent one out there.

I wouldn't recommend any bumper with a swing out tire carrier.

Your best bet is a MORyde / Exogate with an aluminum bumper.

Swing out tire bumpers are mostly all trash. They weigh more than you can imagine, most are very poorly designed, and they're just a bad idea in general.

I've got the Rugged Ridge tire carrier and it sucks. Tire is too far from the tailgate. Considering finding an OEM one on eBay or someplace. Tempted to find someone who can bend me something out of aluminum.

I’ve got at least 2 OEM tire carriers and probably 3-5 snubbers. They are yours for free Mac.

Had one of those as well. I hated it.

I have some 3D printed snubber extensions if you need.

I've been really happy with the Bestop HighRock 4x4 carrier.. It's no longer made but I see them on MP once or twice a year. Hybrid swing away that is tub mounted and tied into the passenger rear sport bar as well as attached to the tailgate with a triangulated system that swings out and away when the tailgate is opened. Not a single rattle or creak from it in the three or four years I have it.

The cargo basket is from Bestop as well. On and off in a matter of minutes. Not the greatest weight capacity but I use only to carry wet stuff when camping..

I wouldn’t say a swing out tire carrier is a bad idea. It depends on your needs and what you do. For people that need clearance or less weight, sure, maybe a bad idea. If you’re not needing that they can be useful.

They are heavy though, and I don’t think there is much of a way of getting around that on a budget.

I have no experience with Dirtworx bumper/tire carrier, but they seem to have a good reputation. I wouldn’t mind having one.

I’ve had an LOD rear bumper/swingout tire carrier for 8 years now and it hasn’t rattled or shook at all. I think they have a new design now that makes the bumper a little smaller. I like it and kind of wish I had it because the shape matches the front LOD bumper I have a little better. I have a couple of their accessories for it too. They are not under $800 though (Dirtworx might be, I don’t know) and they are heavy.

If you don’t need the weight reduction or clearance, they can be useful. Not everyone is a rock crawler.
