LS swap update and questions

And what's a 392 JL selling for now? $50-60K? What could you do to your TJ for even half that amount?

They're still going for $90-$110K new! The 2023s around me are asking high $60s.

No thank you!

Good call. Hopefully a tune will go a long way to curing the issues you are having and maybe the fuel system could be an issue or a dead cylinder or something motor related. Keep us posted.

Yep, it would be at least 65k but I wonder how they’ll hold their value at that price. A shop I just talked to also pointed out most of the used 392s you know were run ragged!

If you had a 392 JL would you drive it nice? I know I'd have fun with it...

I think it would be hard to kill by driving style , electronic nannys keep things in check. Now if you didn't service it as needed it could be a different story.
This would be a fun JL , and you wouldn't be waiting for the valvetrain to jump through its ass like the Pentastar . or the VM diesel issues , or the brain dead inbread 4Xe .

I'd sell it for something cool

You mean like an MR2?

I thought I'd read about people breaking axles and stuff with them still? Maybe not....

I'll bet you can still have fun with it... But it's still not a TJ...

That's why my 04 Rubicon is one of only 2 cars I've ever bought new in my life. Back in 04 it was the same deal with them.

Depreciation on mine with low-ish miles was almost nothing until 2023 when it dropped steeply. I have no idea what the 392s will do.

This probably isn't a good sign.

Maybe a previa 😏

Take it easy brother , sounds to me like you've been breathing too much wildfire smoke ! Get a fun van , like a 454 powered Astro ! Total sleeper . ;)

@Longhorn84 I snapped a video on the way to work this morning. By no means sports car fast, but it at least gives you an idea of my transmission characteristics. LQ4 with low lift cam, stock 4l80e, 4.10 gears and 35's at 5,200ft elevation. I'm switching to 4.88's over the winter, which I imagine will give it some pep, but overall it does great. I can climb any of the passes in Colorado as fast as I want to take the corners, but climbing the IKE at 70 in 3rd is no problem. In 4 low it revs so fast that the transmission can barely keep up before it hits the chip in 4th.

Was that full pedal down? I've actually never tried full throttle but when I get close the RPMs generally shoot up much faster than yours, I'm still worried about blowing my stock Dana 35 but I may have to go out and get some similar driving footage to compare. Thanks for taking the time!

Yeah, pretty close. That might be part of your disappointment, if I’m not 3/4 throttle or more it’ll shift to 2nd almost immediately taking off from a stop. I wouldn’t be too worried about breaking the Dana 35 from an acceleration pull unless you’re standing on the brakes launching it. My gearing sucks, both axles and transmission, so I would think your 1st and 2nd gear would rev out much faster than mine.

I'm going to go joyriding today and let the pedal eat. With top down doors off the noise is pretty extreme, I have a small exhaust leak so that doesn't help and then I can smell the fumes a bit, may have to throw on the hard top and full doors to get some footage without the noise.

Ok, clearly something wrong here, I finally got video from a dead stop and put the pedal to the metal, super slow and wouldn't shift from whatever gear it's in. I let off at 40mph and it stoping at 5k rpm. after this, driving with half pedal, it gets through all 4 gears but clearly, something is wrong. Tune could help?

You need diagnostic equipment hooked up before a tune. It needs to be running as good as you can get it so the tune isn't some abortion that compensates for a broken part.

What did you have done to the pcm when doing the swap? Vats and emissions delete?

Do you have a speed sensor compatible with the GM pcm? A lack of one can throw things off, especially on the auto swaps

I sent my PCM to Novak originally where they billed me for: "Programming, Powertrain Control Module, GM. Remove VATS, calibrate to tire size, axle ratio, add upd".

I do remember having a vacuum issue back when my A/C was working, it's not working now as a hose broke so I can't confirm but wondering if that also has something to do with the performance.

I have emissions that I worked on making compatible for my inspection.

I remember emailing Novak about the VSS and here's what he said: "The GM PCM will receive the VSS signal from our adapter, and the Jeep transfer case will send the VSS signal to the Jeep PCM". It's been 5 years so I can't remember every detail but it seems like all of this should work much better than it does.
