I need help from experienced folks on knowing what to look for.
I found a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Sport Utility 2D (manual trans) 230k miles. The pics look good, inside and out. I can’t see any rust from the pics. It was used as a tow vehicle for a class A the past 5 years. I too have a class A and planning for my purchase to also be a tow vehicle. The price seems right at $7500.xx. The cherry on top is the Jeep comes with everything needed for Flat Towing. Tow bars, cables, etc; it is already wired for towing (lights & breaks). It also has a break away system that applies the breaks if becomes loose. Along with both hard and soft tops. Although he said never put a “breaking system” on it (for the tow).

I had a friend, who is very experienced with my make of RV and he’s towed two different Jeep Wranglers, go over the ad and conversation I’m having with the seller. He said the 2001 thru 2007 had a problem with the base frame rusting out. He stresses to find out if there is any rust underneath. I’ve asked the seller and he states there is no rust. I do not believe this vehicle was ever used off road (without crawling under the Jeep, theres no way to verify).

My question to those with experience, what do I need to ask the seller and/or look for before committing to a purchase? The Jeep is 4 1/2 hrs away and I would like to be as confident as possible before making that drive to look at it. Seller is a private seller. So far I sort of trust him but I’m not foolish. Is there a way to get an experienced TJ person to look at it for me prior to purchase?
Thoughts?

1997-2006 the entire TJ series.

I’ve asked the seller and he states there is no rust.

Photos? Inside the frame is critical, a cheap endoscope camera is handy to verify. Minimum a finger check for scale rust.

Find one with a clean frame, add drain holes (if they haven't been already) and treat the frame to keep it from rusting.

Possible if a forum member is nearby and willing.

Yes. Your profile says you’re in MO but need to know where 4.5 hours away is. Deep in north / northeast rust belt or south out of rust belt?

It’s in Harrison, Ark. The consensus tells me to walk away. I guess I’ll go in a different direction. I trust Honda. I’ll look into the Fit and CRV instead. Just trying to find the most cost effective and easy to deal with.

Not sure what your intended usage is, but discounting the TJ series of Jeeps as an option because of potential frame rot might be foolish. Individual examples, absolutely, there are some rotten vehicles out there and scammers doing half-assed patch jobs. There are good vehicles and solid frames out there, but you have to be diligent (or suffer the consequences).

That said, if a Fit or CRV are your other considerations, I'm not convinced a Jeep Wrangler or similar vehicle is what you want. Those vehicles don't really play in the same sandbox. Not suggesting they're bad vehicles (they aren't) only that they are very different animals to the Jeep.
