Double Clutch Into First Gear?

There is no 1 size fits all. When I start from a stop on a downgrade, 2nd works about the same as starting off in 1st on the flat.

I have the NSG370, 5:13s, 35s. If I'm moving at all on a flat or downgrade, 1st is lower than needed.

On those rare occasions where I'm too slow for 2nd and need to go to 1st, a little rev matching in neutral before going to 1st and it drops right in.

A little finesse goes a long way. And 50+ years of practice.

And if you are undergeared, as so many are, it's a different story.

Who knew there was a right and wrong way to shift gears. That explains all the people buying auto trans Jeeps. Less stressful.
p.s. I shift mine into neutral when coming to a stop instead of downshifting. 🤫

The trail is the only time I downshift to first in motion. I have, here and there ,but not on a regular basis. In fairness, I have the 6 speed and 1st is really torquey, but still. The scenario of a yellow light....I couldn't see myself in a situation at a speed slow enough to slam it back to first to make a light, ha. I'm kinda curious, did you do that and your last 1st gear go out? Maybe there's a reason, ha.

This ^^^ 100%

I don't think I have ever went for first at anything more than an absolute crawl and candidly can't see how it could help in the yellow light scenario.

Maybe it’s more niche to the city I live in with the yellow lights… the Main Street here is a 25mph, sometimes going down to 15mph, and has a lot of back to back lights. During my morning drive to class it’s not uncommon to be crawling forward from light to light at 7-10mph in traffic once I hit this street

Well... Google the Long Island Expressway. I regularly crawl in stop-n-go traffic. Not being in an automatic is a challenge and I get what you're saying about your Main St congestion.

I just can get my head around downshifting to first to accelerate to make a yellow light.. first gear is a starting gear not an acceleration gear. It's over before it began. I want out of first as fast as possible and won't go back until I am at an almost dead start.

I think it’s mostly an issue with my gearing since at these speeds I’m usually below or at 1k rpms in second and feel like I’m lugging along the engine if I were to try and floor it to speed up? In the times I’ve downshifted into first it feels like I can get up to 20-25mph and be in the power band for 2nd after up shifting… guessing maybe going to 3.73 gears would solve this?

lol…. I ditched 3.73s for 4.56s

Best mod I’ve done.

To clarify what I seemed to bave kicked off on the “I don’t down shift to 1st other than on a trail”

I start in 1st from a stop always. Unless, I’m on a steep hill. My driveway is steep, so I do that when I’m backed and stopped I’ll just throw in 2nd and I don’t have to over work the clutch unnecessarily.

I shift above 3k or at 3k
4.88’s, 6 sp NSG370 and 35” tires.

I just don’t ever throw it in 1st on a downshift. If I’m slow enough for that I’m usually stopping, ha.

I downshift, and taught both my boys to do that, if you’ll need it. If it turns red and you know you’ll stop, I throw it in neutral and slow to the stop.
I’ve had the argument, downshifting through every gear is dumb if I know I’m stopping. I got no problem if someone wants to, but I won’t listen to someone who says “you should blah blah blah”

Neighborhood stop sign I know I’m stopping.

Downshifting, starting from 2nd from a stop, floating gears, none of it impresses me, I drove a ‘manual from 16 until I got married at 26, on hills, in traffic in Houston, you name it. So y’all can tap the br

Ha, want to be clear, I wasn't saying there's a right way, at all, ha. I see a lot of guys saying they "float gears" and "start in 2nd"...things I can do...not sure why it's overly helpful in a TJ. In an big rig, floating gears etc, sure.

My only point was I don't downshift to 1st, or I hardly ever do in motion. I start from every stop in 1st, not sure the want to skip it, other than when I'm on a steep hill and I'll maybe start in 2nd, it's no accomplishment, ha.

I taught both my boys to downshift into lights and stops....so they would know how if they needed it. Then I let them in on it....throw it in N and brake into the stop, ha.

I started on motorcycles at 5 or maybe 4 in the late 70's, so when I see some folks brag about shifting techniques...kinda makes me chuckle.

I was more than 4 or 5 in the late 70's, but my motocross bikes didn't require you to use the clutch to up or down shift. Much faster without it. 🇺🇸
p.s. My love for mud came from those days.

That's awesome. We were a Yamaha family, ha. I've been around some...and have made the boomer comment "Yeah, these are cool, but the 2 stroke sound and jump.....I miss that" ha. And agree...absolutely didn't use the clutch when getting after it. Most of mine was running bayous and mud in Houston.

I would bet you have some aches and pains....nothing like doing an ENDO to wake you up..ha

What I did back then has caught up to my spine today. People used to come watch me race just to see the crazy things I would do/attempt. It worked 75% of the time. I wouldn't trade it for a pain free day. 🥳 🇺🇸

That’s a blanket statement that’s not always true…

I start off in second, and I ring it out, I shift always around 3500, normal cruising speed I’m at 3000 rpm’s…. Depends on your gears

But why not ring it out in 1st gear, so when you get to 2nd you're already in the power band?

“If all men were created equal, there would be no need for a passing lane”.
Get it rolling anyway you choose, I just prefer to do so in 2nd.
AND, the statement about US that choose to do so, shift at too low of an RPM, sucks ass. How the hell would you know where I shift????!
