The simple life?

Working in a factory most of my career making good money I watched some of the locals not only survive but flourish on minimum wage. I was working 60-70 hours a week every weekend and they were enjoying weekends off and holidays too. Had to question my motives often. But I did retire at 57 and loving every minute.
I’ve got so much to do this week I’m considering some twelve hour work days and maybe even working a weekend day!

Nah…… Saturday there’s a rodeo in town and I think we’ll go. 😅😁

it really is such a simple equation. It reminds me of when I first heard of Dave Ramsey when I saw one of his videos a couple years ago. It was your typical 'Ramsey Rant' about the virtues of paying off debt & living below your means as a way to financial independence. I remember thinking no shit Sherlock, this isn't exactly news, but apparently it is. I'm fascinated by the empire he has built peddling what is nothing more than what used to be generally accepted common sense, the kind our parent's had by default. Most of them anyway. I'm a big fan of his because he has such a big platform & he preaches the basics to a population that very much needs to come to grips with the basics.

Too many people want everything they want and they want it yesterday without regard for what's around the corner tomorrow.

Saw a saying that made me chuckle a bit. When you’re young you’ve got no money but good health.
When you get older you’ve got the money to do the things you want but not the health.
I know the things I want to get done during the day outlast my Getty up and go😢☹️

Golden advice, living below your means is critical to all people no matter where they fall on the economic ladder, if you can't master that art you'll always be behind the eight ball no matter how much money you make. It seems that's a far more common position with Americans, and America as a nation.
We always lived a "step or two" below our means, and we still do - I retired at 57, wife at 55. Watch out for those $9.99/mo subscriptions that everybody wants to sell you - you can be out a couple hundred bucks a month if you're not careful. Never mind useless luxuries such as PHOOOOOONNEs... ;) :D

I’m a big fan of Dave Ramsey. The only thing I disagree with is his view on CCs. I think he does not promote their use because most people have no self control with them. I put everything I can on my CCs, rack up airline miles and pay them off every month.
Many people can’t discern between a Want and a Need. I don’t impulse buy and spend my money as wisely as I can. Money is my Bitch and I make it work for me not the other way around.
Gaining financial independence is not easy, it’s a long term grind that requires persistence and planning.

^^^This, a thousand times over^^^

I once had a boss tell me that he believes you should rack up as much debt on your credit cards as you can, because in the end, "You only live once". And he was serious about it, as evidenced by the number of toys he owned. I never subscribed to that nonsense, however. Some of my co-workers were driving cars that cost them more than I paid for my house (and that's no exaggeration). In the company parking lot, mine was always the oldest vehicle there. They could never understand how I could be making so much more money than (most of) them, and yet choose to drive a 30-year-old truck. They didn't identify with my approach, nor I with theirs. In the end, to each their own, I guess, but I have no regrets about being frugal (for the most part) to this day.

I'm about to move to a house that's roughly the same size as I have now, but smaller yard. Current house is two stories and my knees aren't the best, so the new house is single story. Yard is much more simple. Bought it from my wife's great uncle who lived there until 90, and passed away a few months ago. So I figure it is quite possible that we could move in there and never move again.

We have 3 kids, youngest is 11. So we've discussed moving to a smaller house, possibly near the beach. The soonest that could be a reality would be when my 11yo moves out. For now, going to enjoy a house with no stairs.

My in laws used to live a couple blocks away. They moved right after we moved a few blocks away lol (though previously we were 5 min away). They moved to a 55+ community that is actually really nice. You said you're not into going to the gym. Though what if it was a 2 min walk to a gym you're paying for? Community pool and club house included. I'm a Poker player, they even have a small Poker table. The 'bar' area has lockers, so you can lock your booze in there and always have it available. Their house is 2 bedroom with tiny yard, but very nice inside, modern, etc.

My dad died last May, he was 86. He often talked about regretting that he didn't travel more. Always wanted to go to Europe and some other places. So I don't know how old you are. Though consider what you want on your bucket list and plan to do those things.

I believe owning is better than renting. Real estate rarely goes down in value and recovers quickly when it does. So buying now, even if you're only keeping it 10 years or so, could be a good investment. Sell when you really want to downsize and that becomes retirement money.

Just read how the smart Phoooooonne used by older folks helps keep dementia away. Really. I’m not just running with you this time. 😳😱

We took my mom and dad on a cruise once and they were hooked. They started going theee or four times a year after that. My dad got a girlfriend after mom died and he still kept going on cruises. Some folks stay on cruises for a year or more just going around to the same ports over and over.

Sure. There's all sorts of things they are and can be used for. Doesn't mean there isn't something else that can do "whatever" better (and/or cheaper). I'd rather use a pair of channel locks than a Workman/Gerber multi tool. I'd rather use a real computer than a crippled "device" any day of the week too.

Funny you should mention cruises. My in laws go on around 4+ cruises per year. They paid for our family to go about 2 years ago and we loved it. That was my first cruise. I've been on 3 cruises since and going on another in June. Kids love the all you can eat food. Carnival is our favorite so far.

I did talk to a couple that lives on cruises. They get off of one and board another. Pretty crazy, but I guess it's a decent life because of the amenities.

Carnival Cruise Line Turns Heads After Banning A 9-Year-Old Guest For Life

parents blame themselves "hes got adhd and we 'forgot' to refill his RX before the trip"

We have seen several cruise line bans in the past. However, this one is certainly unique, and one most of us did not expect. Carnival Cruise Line banned a nine-year-old guest for life over two incidents that took place on the same voyage. Now, the issues all took place after the 9-year-old was given access to wander the ship by themselves, without any supervision. The nine-year-old made their way to the arcade area, and that's where the problems began.

Just Don discussed the incident on his YouTube channel, "He did get into some trouble. Including damaging one of the machines, a major damage, apparently. As well as getting into a fight with one of the other children as well. The crew basically said, 'Look, if you're going to remain on this cruise, and not get kicked off, your child cannot leave your side for the rest of this cruise.'"

Both sides agreed to condition. However, on the final night of the cruise, the parents received a letter from Carnival, asking them to stay in their room the next morning, until further notice. They would later find out that their 9-year-old had gotten the ban for life.

"Two of Carnival employees came with a note in Carnival letterhead, signed by the captain and the chief security officer, saying that the child, because of his destructive behavior on board, has been banned by Carnival Cruise Line for life."

There’s a message here for the younger guys. Start planning your retirement early. Not just the financial aspect but what your life will be when you do retire. If you’re married make sure your Wife is on board because you’ll be spending a LOT more time with her.

So what you are saying is, after 19 wives and 5 Jeeps or is it 5 wives and 19 jeeps(i get confused easily) @TheBoogieman ain't never gonna be able to retire 🤣🤣🤣

funny you say that, I was telling my buddy that very thing the other day as it's my biggest divergence from Ramsey. I've assumed he takes that zero tolerance on credit card approach because if he gives an inch everyone will take that as a green light to keep on acting the fool with them. He also adds that 'studies show' people, even those like you and me that pay the thing off every month & never fork over a penny in interest, buy more with credit cards than they would if they paid in cash. Something about the psychology of handing over cash makes it more difficult than handing over a piece of plastic so you spend more with the plastic. BUT then he goes on to say in the very same breath he uses a debit card for everything :ROFLMAO: , kind of laughable because that kills the whole horror of handing actual cash thing over...

your one-time boss was a retard

In the company parking lot, mine was always the oldest vehicle there. They could never understand how I could be making so much more money than (most of) them, and yet choose to drive a 30-year-old truck. They didn't identify with my approach, nor I with theirs.

my old Subaru sits in lots surrounded by Benzes & Porsches my contemporaries must drive, talk about a lack of understanding of what makes me tick, I swear sometimes they look at me like I'm from another planet

It's not the distance to the gym that deters me, it's that I don't much enjoy communal exercise, lines, waiting... I've had a very simple gym everywhere I've lived since I was a kid, designed for my own manner of working out; I walk downstairs & I'm there. Also, I'm not a fan of treadmills, stationary bikes and all that other cardio crap, I walk 5 miles a day outside, always have, and ride my bike outside. Fresh(er) air & sunlight are good things, so is real scenery, and rain, darkness, wind, even bitter cold in the winter, not a huge fan of the last one but it all keeps me connected to the outdoors in addition to everything else I do outside

I agree with your dad, travelling is pretty important, and I have been a good bit over the past 10 years, moments after dropping my youngest off at college I was on a plane and haven't stopped since. I'll be 60 next go around and plan on continuing to travel, though I will say it isn't quite as exciting as it once was. I love being other places & seeing new things, not as much of a fan of the getting there & back part. We really need that Star Trek transporter gizmo to come on line.

I think you're right about owning vs. renting too, I've always seen it that way, I've only recently thought of the possibility of renting.

I had another idea the other day, maybe dump everything, sell the house, put what i need to keep in storage & just flop around the planet for a year, a month here, a month there... see what happens.

I was hesitant going on my first cruise 20 yrs ago. What will I do on that little boat? Well I was hooked and have been on several since. We have a 8 day to the Mexican Riviera next month and a 12 day Norway cruise with a week in England after we get off. The thing I like about cruising is that I get a taste of different places and then book a follow up trip to the ones I like. Also I’ve met some really nice people.

The thing with not having CCs is how do you book a rental car or a hotel? If you use a debit card they always book a deposit that you have to wait weeks to get back. Also 2 of my cards have supplemental insurance to cover any damage claims on the rentals when I pay with them.

I just don’t know how you guys chose one area to live,

i enlisted in ‘98. longest i’ve lived in one place was Alaska for 6 years. so two kids could graduate from the same high school they started their freshman year. since then i’ve been in Colorado for Three years and am itching to leave here.

where to I don’t know.

For myself and my wife, similar to you. Where do I want my kids to go to school? We have an odd situation where we live on the border of two counties, Riverside and San Bernadino. I'm currently in Riverside. If I walk to the end of my block and cross the street, I'm in San Bernadino. The closest (and best) high school in the area is about a half mile away on the San Bernadino side. The nearest Riverside high school is 20+ minutes away.

We were using my wife's, great uncle's mailing address to keep our oldest (16yo) at that school. Part of the reason we bought his house is because we don't have any family left in the area. We have a second son that will be going to that high school as a freshman next year. Third child is 11, so a few years away. So we're 100% not going to consider moving again until our 11yo graduates high school.

We’ve been in our house for 42 yrs. The Wife and I have traveled the US and the world. I’ve yet to find a place with the weather we have here. Hawaii is the closest we’ve found but the cost of living there is prohibitive for us. Everything we need is minutes away. My town is fairly insulated from the rest of the SoCal madness.
I dream of having a lake home back in Northern Wisconsin but I can’t justify the cost for only 4-5 months of nice weather. I’ve settled on renting a VERBO for a week or two instead.
