Any help would be appreciated! Kinda stumped on this. I have a 01 60th anniversary 4.0 5 speed with sye. Owned about 5 months. I bought it with the p0500 code. Replaced vss and harness when I first got it and speedometer and odometer still did not work. Previous owner said it would work sometimes. Well yesterday it finally randomly started working but stopped again. Anyone know where I should look to figure out what’s wrong with it? Is it an electrical issue?
Since you've already replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and the harness, it's a good start. Here are a few suggestions you might want to consider:
Check Connections: Make sure all connections related to the VSS, including the connector to the instrument cluster, are clean and secure. Sometimes, corrosion or loose connections can cause intermittent issues.
Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors: If your Jeep has wheel speed sensors (found on some models), check those as well, since they can sometimes affect the speedo reading.
Grounding Issues: Ensure all grounding points related to the instrument cluster and VSS are clean and free from rust or corrosion. A poor ground can definitely lead to erratic behavior.
Instrument Cluster: It could also be an issue with the instrument cluster itself. Look into whether other gauges are affected, as a failure in the cluster might cause the speedometer to act up.
Check for Other Codes: Use a scan tool to check if there are any other codes present. Sometimes, additional problems can lead to a P0500.
Wiring Issues: Since you mentioned it worked for a bit and then stopped, it could be worth inspecting the wiring for any frays or shorts, especially near the transmission or harness.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
