Why hard top and full doors in Moab?

Watch out for those errant desert trees... They sneak up on ya

Driving from Minnesota with flat trailer, no decent way to secure my rig and all the stuff from weather or theft without it. I have no place to put it safely if I remove it out there. I know the decision will add risk on the trails and may cost me some dings/gouges. I put a nice groove in my JK hardtop out there, but will be careful as I can.

Also, bringing the wife so nice to have more effective heat and a/c as may be needed. Once I live closer, which is next year, then I can have more flexibility to run out there without a top and half or no doors.

And I don't have a soft top

If you want to remove your top & doors you can store them on my car trailer... They'll be semi-secure in the RV park I'm staying in... Just an offer.

That's a really good offer Rick, thank you. I will keep this in mind as we get closer and see the weather. I've got to park in a hotel parking lot, so not very safe. I don't think they would appreciate me dragging hardtop into my room either!!!

It's been years since I've been so I'm sure the weather has changed.. I did one year with only a safari top and it rained/snowed on me and the other year I brought my top and ran without the whole time...

If you have a Safari top bring it and then if you decide to take the hard top off you could still run your doors... Breaking a LJ hard top would be tough...

I will have my safari style shade under it and so just need a solution to store the hard top for a day/days and could be nice to have that option. I could put my doors in the back of my truck under my "secure" bed cover.

OK well keep it in mind if the weather is good. I have to park my trailer in a overflow lot so it'll be out of the way.. But I can also talk to the campground and let them know about the top... Sort of be watching to make sure no one tries to walk off with it...

Got my rig weighed and it was about where I expected. Fuel full, trail gear in the back, spare tire, and hardtop installed but no driver is 4760 lbs.

IMG_8551.jpeg

Then came back with it on the trailer and got that weighed for science. I had first dialed in my tongue weight to 750 lbs after adding the toolbox and winch since the last time I found the right position for the jeep on the trailer.

My trailer TPMS sensors and trailer rear view camera work as intended, so all set for the trip to Moab. I’d like to get in some dirt action beforehand, but not mud bogging as is the common condition locally.

I will have a two car garage at the condo we’re staying at that you can use to store it as well.

I need to do this with my Jeep...

I'm seriously jealous of your trailer... Nice job.

Added a winch disconnect solenoid. Debatable if needed but I had it and it filled in the last of my aux beam switches nicely.

Added some washer fluid nozzles after losing my original one with the hood louvers. Put in two of them, gotta be able to see out the window!

That's something I was just looking at and realized I still hadn't hooked them up yet.

they wiring has been the bane of my build, i WANT to go in there and rebuild the entire looms,

i just don’t have the time, or the space to do that. My wife also believes every task should be completed the same day it’s started. 😂

Post Moab initial damage assessment:

Not bad, mainly trail rash in the expected places. The main issues were all self induced by my lack of catching loose nut and bolts before they resulted in damage or simply fell out. Hard lesson learned about ensuring I’ve got thread locker everywhere I don’t have a locking nut.

The first 3 days / 6 trails resulted in a few noises except an intermittent contact between the front driveshaft and the MORE engine skid.

IMG_8897.jpeg

There is also evidence of contact between the driveshaft and one of the transmission adjustment screws, check the line in the sticker:

IMG_8898.jpeg

Prior to the trip there was no contact between the Savvy my TC skid cross member and the SYE but now they appear to touch:

IMG_8896.jpeg

There is now contact between the exhaust down pipe and the engine skid, can be easily solved with some trimming:

IMG_8899.jpeg

My downturn exhaust melted the plastic ring on my rear axle vent:

IMG_8892.jpeg

Here is the trail fix, the used foil from Mac’s manifold burrito!

IMG_8891.jpeg

That lasted 2 days on the trail then 2 days on the trailer all the way home.

Now for the impact areas, nothing unexpected and frankly less than expected contact on the skid plates.

LCA brackets took a beating:

This is where my front MCE fender flare lower screw used to be. It fell out twice while on the trailer and the fender started flapping around.

Next post is for the loose items and some thoughts on equipment

Now for the stuff I could have prevented:

New rear shocks ready to going to replace the two that failed due to contacting the coil perch after the pinion angle got far out of spec due to loose UCAs

IMG_8916.jpeg

This is the contact point on the shock bodies that caved both in:

IMG_8893.jpeg

This is where one of my body bolts used to be, the others saved by tightening them during the pinion angle debacle. I used anti seize on them and they shook loose. Mac had some blue thread locker and I will remove, clean and reinstall all of them with blue thread locker.

IMG_8894.jpeg

This is an M10 bolt holding my front track bar in place. The bolt should be 1/2” but that one was lost on the trail and Mac had an M10 in the right length to save my butt and get me back home.

IMG_8908.jpeg

Missing skid plates bolt, had a flange nut but still shook loose:

IMG_8906.jpeg

Dented steering stabilizer due to contact with the clamp on the tie rod. Rotated the clamp to clear:

IMG_8902.jpeg

Not part of the jeep but this brand new jack leaked a ton of fluid all over my tub, not good:

IMG_8914.jpeg

On a positive note, my M18 inflator was a champ. Seemed about as fast as the guys using on board air or detached inflators. Quick to move wheel to wheel and “set it and forget it” simplicity. The case allows me to have spare batteries but I used one 5Ah per day and recharged it overnight.

IMG_8915.jpeg

I think will retire my Viair inflator now.

As for tools, I think I brought too many. My tools bags weigh a lot and take up a lost of space with my spare in the tub.

I will do the research to slim down to just the tool sizes that matter for the rig and leave the rest home. I can use the room and save the weight.

Finally, got this handy BFH Garage branded mug via an impromptu giveaway just before Monday wheeling, thanks @hosejockey61 for that!

I will post up any more findings one I remove the skids and see if there is more to the story.

Did you install lots of suspension parts at once? Trying to figure out how you managed that many loose bolts.

Yes. I did everything all at once. Lift, axles, body lift, all mods. Everything was tight when I left for Moab but 1300 miles on a trailer then 3 days of wheeling literally shook my rig apart on the 4th day. I really should have used thread locker instead of anti seize and also checked everything after some initial use.

In my experience, when several suspension parts are done at the same time, it is hard to remember what got torqued properly without marking the nuts and bolts with a paint marker or equivalent. Can’t tell you how many times I “thought” I torqued everything until a loose part while driving told me I didn’t. I always mark nuts and bolts now.
