Upgrading the sound system on your Jeep Wrangler TJ

This picture pains me to look at.

My ideal head unit doesn't exist:
  • wireless CarPlay
  • physical volume knob
  • no built-in amplifier (pre-amp outputs only)
  • 2 camera inputs with hard buttons for selection
  • hand-delivered to my front door by Sydney Sweeney

You can get all that except the volume knob and Sweeney on the Sony XAV-AX9000, and it’s very nice.

Yes—that model is on my short list. I may go that way, or I might get one of the many cheap Chinesium HUs that fits the stock opening and has a knob.

I wanted a knob, but it turned out I was undisturbed by the lack of it on the Sony. I got the 6000 because I didn’t want more than one camera.

The XAVAX1000 has a volume knob and can be had for close to $200. Add a $50 wireless carplay dongle to it.

I LIKE THAT PLAN. Going on the list. Here's one on fleabay for $160.

There's even room in there for the dongle, since it doesn't take up two DINs for the whole height.

I have that Sony HU and while I really like it, the volume knob is tiny and it's the one thing I don't like about it (i.e. I wouldn't buy it for that feature). I have a JVC KW-Z1000 in my truck that has big physical buttons. They are much easier to use.

Having an intuitive interface is more important than having a dial knob IMO. On all my SD’s I had to tap two buttons and turn the dial multiple clicks to find a setting. If it wasn’t the right setting I had to tap another button to back out and keep using the dial knob to try to find the right setting. It’s very annoying.

The higher end units have higher voltage pre-amp outputs, which is perhaps similarly overlooked in terms of value.

A 3-year warranty is also good insurance.

anyone been able to get better sound out of the stock sound bar in these things? i have zeroooo mid bass and its super annoying. really dont want a subwoofer.

For starters it’s a poor place for mid bass. But it is what it is. I’ve stuffed mine and bumped
up to 6.5’s and not much different.

Thats a shame. i dont want earth shattering base, i just want that mid bass to fill the sound lol. i wonder how wake board tower pods sound

I’ve read those are a good option.

I have one 8” sub and feel like it resolves the sorry 4-speaker stock setup.

i have a '05 Wrangler Sport, i'm wiring up a new head unit for the first time (eeep!) lol. i got the old head unit out (fortuntaely the previous owner didn't cut out the factory harness) and i've looked at enough youtube videos and whatnot to where i'm pretty much good to go, i just had a couple of quick questions:

i got a red wolf wiring harness to plug into the factory harness, and as i go to wire it up to the harness that came with the new head unit (Kenwood Exceleron KCD-X305) it has 2 yellow and 2 black wires. is that so you can run a power/ground wire out to something like an amp? do i need to comb9ine both of them with the corresponding single yellow/black wire on the radio harness? or can i just pick one and leave the other covered up?

Also, the harness that came with the radio has a really long black ground wire, its like twice as long as the other wires for some reason. is it supposed to go to it's own ground screw? i'm thinking i can just cut it to the same size as the other wires and wire it up to one of the black wires in the red wolf harness.

sorry if these are dumb questions, i was always scared to do this back in the day.
