Jeep sales tanking, buyers say too much tech

I guess I am in the minority here, I love all the new tech and creature comforts in my newer rides. Can the components break down, sure, any part new or old can and will break. I get that there are more pieces to the machine therefore increasing the chance of failure but hey, isn't that what the warranty is for? I am speaking about non jeep rides only here, with some small exceptions.

Leather seats you say? I love mine, and the seat heaters allow me to keep my top and doors off longer than the peasants without it. Hell, I wish I had cooled seats as well!! Doesn't matter if you have cloth or leather, your butt be sweating & stanking while creeping on some trails, AC seats...problem solved.

Flame on boomers! :ROFLMAO:

I have zero problem with any of that. People like what they like. Just give the option to buy one with the tech level different people want.

Most of it comes from .gov now though. Sensors, backup camera, lane assist, etc. Those systems require the computer infotainment system. All that probably adds $10,000 to a new car price. If you crack the windshield of a car with driver assist you're looking at $1,000-2,000 to replace it. According to the people at the glass place that fixed my rock ding on the Jeep.

On a side note, my wife's car has button seat settings for 2 people. So I press it before I get in and the seats and mirrors reset. It's great when you are taller and can't get in unless the seat is back. But every couple months, one of us gets in and the seat tries to go all the way up and all the way forward like it's trying to recalibrate it's position. If you don't stop the seat, it will pin you to the steering wheel. So good tech, that's likey going to kill me one day when it breaks.

The first CC I ever used - on a '78 C30 - was one button: SET.

I like "resume", accelerate/de accelerate on most CCs can be tapped for approx 1MPH difference.

Whatever it is, I want the buttons on a stalk, NOT on the damn steering wheel. I always have to look to use such, fortunately only one of our 3 cars has that setup. I purposely installed a Rostra on my TJ because I didn't want the steering wheel controls.

I've never driven a vehicle with "adaptive" cruise - I'd like to try one sometime, but I'm concerned that it would make me a "pack driver".

My TJ tapping the buttons goes in 2 mph increments up or down, only vehicle I've seen that does that.

On my truck it's a mile per tap but if you hold it then it goes in 5's and the setting is all shown on the screen.

Combined with adaptive cruise I don't have to touch the pedals when driving across the country. Only when I need to fuel up.

Thanks, but no thanks. My kids will just destroy it anyways.

Instead of that mini van , a 75 Toyota FJ 55 " iron pig " would be harder for the kids to destroy .

I too need the seat back when getting in - thus I hate power seats. Too damn slow.

But you're right - I have no problem with effete vehicles for the effete. I'm just pissed that I can't get one the way I want one...

Do you find yourself becoming a "pack driver" with the adaptive? I'd like to try one sometime, but I'd be afraid of it turning me into a pack driver - something I kinda don't like. Of course, I wouldn't be willing to pay for adaptive even if it were to turn out that I liked it.

The nice thing about leather seats, they are easy to clean. Our 2015 JkUR seats look fantastic for being 9 / 10 years old depending on when the first owner bought it.

But yes sitting on those things when left out is the CA sun, ooh they are hot!!

I would be great to line order Jeep rather than then all the stuff they load into them.

I don't but a lot of that depends on how well it works in my F350. I've had rental cars, looking at you Chrysler, where I think their implementation of adaptive cruise is garbage.

I will override it using the gas pedal if I need to to close distance in preparation to pass and as soon as I use the left turn signal to change lanes it starts speeding back up if needed, doesn't do that when you use the right signal.

I find I pay more attention to how fast people are coming up, in front of me, and I anticipate my lane change sooner.

But I like it because if I am getting complacent or something out of the ordinary it will slow me down so I don't hit anyone and if there is a lot of traffic it's easier to let it follow at whatever speed the traffic is going, this is a scenario where I can't simply get over and pass.

I tend to drive faster than most for our area. usually have the cruise set 7-15 over and I can't stand getting passed by someone that I just passed so if I have to click the cruise up a few mph for a while to never see them again, I will.

I have to admit that I loved the adaptive cruise control on our Subaru Outback. It wasn’t perfect but it was darn close. It made the highway trips very enjoyable.

This right here!! If I want a radio upgrade, let me have it, don’t make me order package 501A for $6k more. I guess I understand they can’t set around building custom orders all day AND keep up with demand but, it appears they could be more flexible.

The thing of it is, they COULD build by line item - more or less at least - if they wanted too. I worked for an electronics mfg company back in the 80s and 90s - we were bleeding edge as far as CAM went. Barcode drove everything, a given board or system could be configured exactly as the customer wanted it. There's no reason whatsoever why the automotive industry couldn't do that too - in fact many years ago they did just that, long before CAM was ever envisioned. Granted, the number of options has increased since then, but we now have CAM to control the configuration.

I want a radio with no boot up time. Instant FM.

Just wait until it's all "subscription" model based like BMW and many of the other big luxury names want to do.

I'm not worried, as I have zero plan of ever buying into that crap. The auto industry has learned well from the TelCos/CableCos - and this nonsense ramped up with the introduction of the smartphone. That got people used to pay, pay, pay, paying for EVERYTHING, and then throwing it away after a couple or three years and starting over again. People are $9.99/monthed to death. Fuck that. But Americans are effete and luxury loving - most will buy into it and not think anything about it. Indeed - I'm putting down vinyl plank flooring in our rental since the last tenant trashed the carpet. I had to really get around the word "luxury" - as apparently ALL vinyl plank is sold as "LVP" or "Luxury Vinyl Plank". As I avoid the word "Luxury" like the plague, I had to realize it was nothing more than a marketing slogan for Luxury loving Americans.

When I ordered my 1983 GMC T-15 , I could get individual options , (RPO's ) that I wanted. I could get the large fuel tank , full skid plates , gauges ,and 1500 lb. payload suspension. All this on a base truck , regular cab long bed 4X4 with a 2.8 V-6 . I still remember the optional 3.73 gear ratio cost $43.00 . You can't re gear 2 axles for that cost !

Yea - my '86 C10 was like that, and my dad's '63 1 ton GMC was most certainly like that - I still have the order sheet for it.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this. I just know that there isn’t a jeep built that’s worth over $50k no matter what the options are.

You would be vastly wrong. just the drive train alone is almost worth that. go to a dealer and price out new diffs, transmission, tcase and engine with accesories. the rest of the jeep is almost free.
the very few times I shopped new cars I have to keep reminding them I want the cost of the car not the monthly payment. The only time I take a loan out is if it 0% or finance gets me a better price and then I pay it off after 3 payments. My daughters Rogue I bought is $808/mo @ 0% for 36 months.

The friggin glued on ipad in my wife's 16 MB glitched out and when black. It came back a half hour later, told the wife if it glitches again we are dumping the car. Not spending 5-8K to fix this again (went out under warranty once).

i work for mercedes....if it happens again let me know.

A vehicle should never cost more than your mortgage payment, for those that are lucky to have a mortgage these days. This is why I've kept my TJ for close to 20 years now. Compared to a CJ, my TJ has a ton of wiz bang goodies!

Mortgage payment = to a car payment???? in 1997 my mortgage payment was $1400/mo (included taxes) any car payment then was less than $300/mo. now a days mortgages are $3k minimum around here and those morons probably have 2+ car leases at $770+/mo
