Jeep sales tanking, buyers say too much tech

Ford patents a lot of things I hope never really happen.

However, WAZE has ads that will pop up sometimes when you are stopped at a light. Such as a buy one get one offer for the gas station next to where you are stopped. I've never once paid any attention to them but I would expect the ads to be similar. On that they don't make any sound they just pop up on the phone.

I couldn't imagine an ad that took over in the middle of a song.

But think about it...

If Tampon Tim becomes vice president, GPS could provide real-time updates on the nearest tampon dispensers.

Give me manual windows, manual locks, manual seat adjustment handles, no tpms, a key (no fob), an engine with room to work, a DD stereo, no clinometer, some real analog gauges, and an easy way to reach the AC evap, heater core, and fuel pump, and I can fix the rest.

. A top of line Rubicon in 06 had all the available technology for the time in it.

I agree that they *should* be apples to apples but i don't agree with this statement. The TJ lacked a lot of tech present in other vehicles, like power windows and locks, tpms, abs and traction control, automatic HVAC controls, parking sensors. Luxury SUVs at the time had wild stuff like pushbutton selectable shifting and suspension modes...Germany and Japan were doing that stuff in the 80s. GM was putting out trucks with 4 wheel steering well before 06 (and multiple Japanese automakers had beat them to it by over a decade).

I get where you are coming from with a technology in the new ones ...

Not to belabor the point but I'm not even considering the "tech". 285 hp V6 vs 190 hp I6, 8 speed auto vs 4 speed auto, 32.7x11.5 tire vs 30.5x9.65 tire, 17" wheel vs 16" wheel, etc.

That still goes back to my point for the time period. Many early 2000's vehicles still had 4-5 spd autos and maybe you 6 if you were manual. That was the tech of the era. Same with motors, most HP number numbers from that era are low just like our TJ / LJ's. The only stuff touching 300 HP + back then was pretty much sports cars and maybe some gas pickups. GT mustangs only had 260 HP in 04, your typical vette only had 350 HP.

Our jeeps used the tech that was available to the era that they were from, just as the current jeeps do. It's apple to apples as far as I'm concerned.

that's the area where i WOULD consider it fairly apples to apples - they're both fairly basic run of the mill drivetrains for the time period - the 3.6 goes in the minivan, after all. In contrast to, for example, if the JL was getting the twin turbo direct injected 3.0 Hurricane.

It's all the comfort and luxury crap where the comparison breaks down, like a wifi hotspot and 12"+ touchscreen.

Nobody is buying cars now unless they are cheap and/or can get a 10 year loan to keep their cashflow working. People can't afford stuff.

Jeep should go back to as barebones as possible and cut the price. Then mall crawlers can afford payments and rock crawlers can afford modifications and not worry as much about scratches.

Give people options on what to add. Tech, comforts, all the way up to serious axle and tire packages.

They were likely trying to milk the line until EVs took over then put out some neutered EV Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

the costs of the components and production between the two aren't the same (inflation considered) so a direct comparison, then versus now, isn't valid

I get where you are coming from with a technology in the new ones, but I do think its an apples to apple comparison myself. A top of line Rubicon in 06 had all the available technology for the time in it. As technology improves I would expect that all the most recent tech would be in a 24. Yeah you can park the two next to each other now and go "damn this 06 is bare bones with nothing" but that wasn't the case in 06, so it is apples to apples as far as i'm concerned. The inflation calc coming up with $45K is also pretty spot on for what they should cost now as far as I'm concerned. $45-50K.

Its simple. A '24 is stuck with a bunch of crap that nobody wants. Get rid of the crap, and it might be apples to apples.

I've been saying this for decades: I want to buy a vehicle by LINE ITEM. No packages, no "standard features", just a checkbox by a line item.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this. I just know that there isn’t a jeep built that’s worth over $50k no matter what the options are.

If I'm being honest, I'm not sure there is a car out there (with the exception of high performance vehicles, classics, collectors, and specialty vehicles) that is worth 50k. Well, not to me at least.

New minivans are now over 50k for a well-optioned model.

I had a hard enough time justifying 35k for my one-owner F150.

All I need is seats, a stereo, an engine, and some HVAC.

Pretty much! And I can pass on the stereo if need be. They're fine, blah, blah, but they're not a must have. I do want cruise control, but that can be added with a Rostra kit just like I did with my TJ.

Thanks, but no thanks. My kids will just destroy it anyways.
