Gear pattern opinion please!

Sorry, I've been at a memorial since Thursday and haven't had much time.

Reading through the thread, at one point you added carrier shims and ran another pattern. That will NOT change depth. Pinion shims are the only way to establish depth but you need to ensure you have proper carrier pre-load prior to running a pattern. You can't add it after and expect good results.

Even if your old shims were damaged, you can still measure their thickness (individually) to establish a starting point. You have a lot of time into this now which is paying dividends into your experience.

Blackjack's last post was good. Let me take a look at what you just posted....

Looking at these last two pics, you are very close. Be sure to write down the pinion depth and carrier shim stacks for reference.

I would try to pull 1-3 thou and check again. Frustrating but you are close 👍

Forgot to ask ... What axle?

Than you, thank you all for helping me out! This is a Dana 44 rear, still have the front to go...

I'm pretty wore out now but I will take .003 out from the pinion tomorrow. I'm guessing ing I will have to adjust the carrier over as I am at .009 backlash now. This is where I seem to chase my tale..

Pull the.003 and do not worry about the carrier until you have ran a pattern. Even if the backlash is a touch high you will still get a readable pattern.

DUB , The one huge upside to all this is you will totally know what to do in the future , and how many shops would have said "good enough " , you have skin in the game. Hang in there , it will be worth it !!!

Okay I ran one more, after doing front axle u-joints.... -.003 on pinion. Caps are torqued at 60 and backlash is .008. the carrier is tight.

And that's why this is the best jeep forum on the planet. I feel we have the most knowledgeable people here. Good job of sticking to it and not giving up

I hand it to you, this is one thing I am sort afraid to try to do.

I'll tell you, I like to think I am a pretty good mechanic and this is not just turning wrenches, it is a learned art. No amount of reading online will get you there, you need help with patterns!

This is just a sample of my pain right now. I pulled trans and oil pan for RMS, clutch/flywheel/actuator, output seals, al new U-joints, rear disc brake conversion, rockjock steering, ball joints and new brakes up front. Doing gears in the middle of all this was a bad decision, lol! I do have a lift though so this is easier than on the ground..

Wow, you‘ve got a lift I am jealous. That is a lot to tackle at one time. Hopefully there’s isn’t a deadline to getting it done.

Even with a lift, its still hard work. Moving that carrier in and out with gravity against you is a pain, especially if its a full locker case. They are heavy. Sometimes, I find it better to pull the axle and put it on jack stands and take my time.

Would have been easier in hindsight!
