The recents discussion has peaked my interest in a 5.2 swap. For some reason a 318 sounds way cooler than a 360. 🙄
The power numbers are not exciting at all. However with headers and a mild cam what can we expect? North of 320hp? Can it be tuned or power chipped? The swap is not exciting for 240hp. But the compatibility with a tj may be worth the effort.

What is needed from the donor rig?
Engine, engine harness and PCM? Anything else?
Fuel pump?
Are the TJ fuel lines adequate?
Is all the wire splicing done just with engine bay harnesses?

They will chime in when they get some time.
Looks like the nv3500 was the manual trans that came with the magnums.

Damn I'm trying to work on my axle.....

5.2 rev's faster and smoother than the 5.9 as the 5.9 is a truck engine and the 5.2 is more the car engine.
Both are hindered by SHITTY heads. The most desirable model to look for is a R/T model which comes stock with better heads and a better tun on the PCM.

These engines respond to engine modifications just like any other. Make them breath better and you'll get more power. Dollar for dollar the best mods to make are better heads, & larger throttle body & a mild cam. And then contact Ryan from FRP and get a tune for it.

What is needed from the donor rig?

The engine & engine wiring harness & PCM plus all the accessories.

Fuel pump?
Are the TJ fuel lines adequate?

TJ fuel pump and lines are adequate for a stock to mild build on either engine

Is all the wire splicing done just with engine bay harnesses?

You have to blend the TJ harness with the Dodge harness. It makes a difference if you are going with a manual or automatic as to how you do it.

The other nice thing is the Durangos and grand cherokees are everywhere.
Thinking of going with an AX15 trans.

If you are going automatic then get the engine from a Jeep. If you are going manual tranny then it doesn't matter.
With an auto from a Jeep the starter is on the passenger side. With either transmission from a Dodge the starter is on the drivers side.

Yes Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 or Dakota pickup or Durango will all work. The one thing is you have to be careful with Durango's and some Jeeps or newer trucks as some will have the security feature on them. You will need a PCM from a 98-2000 PU since you have 98 TJ it's CCD and they changed to PCI in 2001. And a 1997 PCM will not work.

I'll be in my garage until this afternoon so I won't reply until then.
Yes they used the NV3500 instead of the NV3550. I can't remember what is different. If you want to use a manual you need to find a Dodge Dakota V-6 bellhousing. They use to be cheap and could be gotten for $35-75 but now since they are getting harder to find they got for $150-300. I'll have to get you the years as I don't remember off the top of my head.

Here is the BEST thread on the subject you'll find.

Great thanks. I won’t be doing anything until after a pending relocation out of CA. But keeping my eyes open. Would like to find a manual Dakota eventually. Just trying to get a list together. Enjoy the day working on your Jeep. Thanks for the info.

Take a look at this guys website. He's the Mopar magnum engine guru and has some great stuff to make them have a little more pep.
Also you can do a smog legal swap really easy. So I wouldn't let living in CA stop you.

I think I've given you enough to research for the next couple of days. Honestly the magnum engine is a good platform to build off for a great Jeep.

That's not saying a Hemi or LS isn't a option but it's a lot more expensive for either of those two options

Lots of good stuff. I will hope to find a 98-2000 5.2 with a manual someday.
Enough info!!!! Get to work on that axle!!!

I actually wish I could do an emissions legal Magnum swap. With my 04 though, I need to use a hemi from an 04 or 05. Any later, and the bus changes.

This why I’m waiting till I move, besides I dont think I will have enough time to finish. Lol.

Just waiting on those smarter than me (that's a lot) to sign off on my gear pattern and then I'll button it all up. Got the new wheel studs pressed in and the Set20 bearings pressed on the axles.
I’d like to help, but I have not yet been certified to sign off on patterns. I’ve applied with @Blackjack, but he says I’m not ready yet, and need to provide him more data.

And what the hell is Venmo, anyway?

Hey I asked you that last year...

So far the condenses is that I need to pull 0.002" of shims out of the pinion depth and then slap it together and run it.

Me neither. I can’t figure out if the 2.5 gets bolted on top of the magnum v8 as a blower or if it just goes in the back seat…..

The real issue with the magnum swap is wading through the BS. One guy said you have to keep the stock pcm to keep the factory gauges.

No it's a pony engine for starting the magnum on cold mornings.

Yes but you have people here that have done the swap and have running vehicles to prove what works.
