Work Bench & Garage Version 2

While I'm focused on getting my Jeep on the road in the shortest manner possible, I can't help but look to what's next. One set of parts that are still sitting on the floor of the garage are from my passenger seat:

I realize I can spend an hour to do all these parts with a wire wheel on the angle grinder - or bit the bullet and finally get a sand blasting cabinet.

So I'm going with the HF jobber:

I really don't have floor space for it in my garage - all the floor space against the walls are filled.

So I toyed with putting it in the basement but that involved so many more issues:
  • New Air Compressor in basement - $300+
  • Dust will still get out of the cabinet to some small degree - no matter how hard I try to seal it (which I plan to do with silicone caulk while assembling)
  • Basement also has limited floor space right now (need to clean it again - even though I just cleaned it up a few months ago...)

So I decided I'm going to with chopping up my original tool cabinet. It's closing in on 30 years old and, while it's still needed for its storage, I never really used the large opening in the bottom of the cabinet.

So the CAD came back out...

Original placement of the toolchest circled in orange:

New placement by removing the top section (it is 2 separates - top & bottom) in orange. New spot for the sand blasting cabinet in green:

Last night I had a few minutes and was excited to start to see how this is going to work out. So I cleared off the workbench:

Moved over the top cabinet:

Shelf with the oil pans will be cleared out for the bottom part of the cabinet after I trim it.

Because of the construction of the bottom, I'll need to trim it and then cut and re-weld the bottom of the cabinet to the trimmed cabinet to keep rigidity.

I forgot how much of a pain these older slider designs are to remove the drawers. You have to push into the draw in the oblong hole while pushing back on the slider - trying not to skewer your hand with the screwdriver used to push back the slider...

I like the setup initial look at the setup - keeps my tool storage maximized at minimum cost (I want to get a 56" HF toolchest where I would replace half the workbench footprint - but the wife nixed that when I offered the essentially free option 🤣)

I also think the curvature of the air compressor will give a good angle for the side door of the sand blasting cabinet to open plenty enough to get parts into the cabinet.

Already started looking into upgrades for the HF cabinet - such as the 5-gal bucket with a wet/dry vac to pull the dust, more lighting, etc.

Upon further review - the lower cabinet has too much sheet metal 'hooks' where the metal bends over and then is spot-welded and the bottom would need some serious base pieces added to keep the rigidity.

Ultimately - I decided that it would be too much work to cut up the lower cabinet for my intent. I only had about 0.5" of fit with the draws into my wood shelf and I didn't see getting there as I dug in further.

So I removed the shelf in the workbench and just went with the lower as a whole without wheels.

Only issue is now the ash bucket for my fireplace needs a new home - but that can live in the basement (when it's not holding ash just before going into the trash)

I still plan to trim off the brackets for the closet door for the lower (open) portion since that door went in the garbage. Then all 3 drawers will be in place.

And I updated the 3D Fusion 360 render:

Plenty of room ready for the sand blast cabinet - just holding off to see if it goes on sale before I 'need' it. I have uses but I want to get Jeep driving before I 'need' the cabinet for other parts that are Phase II after the Jeep rides again.

3D printed parts for a dust collector.

Top (lid) will connect to my wet/dry vac. Side inlet will connect to the sand blaster. Goal is dust settles in the bucket and not clog the vac filter.

Anyone interested - I'm open to share the Fusion 360 models or the 3d print files.
