Woodrow's 97 Green TJ Moderate Build

I've been somewhat of an automotive enthusiast my whole life but I've never known anything about things like tuning or cam profiles or combustion chambers etc. I still don't but at least I'm beginning to know what I don't know and its so complicated and interesting.

Same here. Always liked my cars and have had my hands into all of them I've owned. We've generally kept our cars a long time and don't want to ruin them. I've generally felt I could leave well enough alone to maintain reliability in my other cars when it came to the power plant.

The TJ was just so slow getting up the mountains, the power so bad and the fuel economy so bad that that I thought - I can put my mind to this, study and figure out how to do it better. It's a cool time we live in where we've gained so much knowledge and made it easier to access while at the same time there are good performance options for the 4.0L platform that haven't been available before.

For the stretch. Details to follow (once I get them figured out).

In case you need some inspiration... :sneaky:

I think you left "moderate build" a few exits back.
Yes and no. My definition of "moderate" has changed. By page 16 of this this thread, I had completed the initial goals of the build which were locked 33s, short arms, stock fenders and minimal armor (https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/woodrows-97-green-tj-moderate-build.51602/post-1337306). There were a few nice bolt-ons, like Black Magic Brakes, a Genright tank and the stroker. But it was in some ways less capable than a stock Rubicon and really what I would now call mildly built. Of course @Mike_H and @JMT immediately laughed at the "done" idea. But that was before my 1st Moab trip in '23 and I was where I wanted to be while starting to get more serious about wheeling. Now, with more trail experience, I have some idea of what could be better. I've have done most of the "mild" changes I can do just bolting parts on, so the next phase will involve some fabrication and departure from stock suspension and fenders. That will finally get me to "moderate". It won't be "wild" though. I consider a build like @NashvilleTJ 's to fit that definition; built V8, tons and 40s and everything that goes with all that.

So yeah, still just approaching moderate.

Your moderate build is kinda like my Face Lift.... It started out to be just some updates and other type work to turn into a whole other thing...

Can't wait to see what you come up with.... But there are easier ways to do a frame stretch than using another TJ frame. And you're only gunna need about 5" of frame per side as it is.

A little more than that with the method I'm using but your are correct, I didn't need a whole frame. That was the only option though. The yard no longer allows people to cut stuff. I guess they had some liability issue. Nice to have spare stuff however.

You buy a nice, rust free frame, send it to me, and I'll give you mine back. You can cut whatever you need from it. Should be able to get enough steel for your stretch...Might not be all continuous, but you'll have enough, eventually. :)

Are you doing a wheelbase only stretch or a tj6 type stretch?
