He probably knows who works on it.My dad won't go anywhere near my jeep.

Rotate the retainer, put 2 non locking nuts with a couple of washers to stabilize the backing plate. Stick a prybar behind the flange, give the end a little boop using the brake shoe as a fulcrum, it will pop the shaft right out. Done it that way dozens of times.
Ok, I tore apart the driver's side and was able to pop the axle out using this technique:
Then got all the hardware attached using this video from BFH garage @hosejockey61 (I think I vaguely recall watching this 4-5 years ago on the last dana 44 brakes I had to do).
Extremely helpful, it went together almost as long as the video is. Gonna do the other side later this week and report back on brake feel
For anyone else doing this, don't be like me. Just buy the tools![]()
Yes, I would highly recommend getting these from harbor freight. Made the job way easier.
This is the kit I got

I didn't even know there were tools. A few extra curse words was all I used.
The pliers i have are probably 50-55 years old now. They were my Dad's from when he was a rural mail carrier.
I’ll take a photo of my two brake tools. One was my grandpa’s on my mom’s side other was grandpa on dad’s side.
I’ll say my dad never had a use since he always said “I check the oil and fill the gas tank, the rest is for Tom to worry about “. RIP Dad

Here is mine from my Dad. No telling how many brake shoes he changed with it.
I know he was changing shoes once a month and drums every other month.
He had 66 miles of dirt roads on his mail route.

Talk about a timeless design! The one I have from harbor freight is identical, just newer.

Here's the new version. Spot the difference!

It looks like the bracket that spans the shoes had springs on both sides instead of just the one yellow one?
Also, is your cable routed correctly? It looks like it is running behind that tab on the cable guide on the bottom but in front of the tab on top?

Good eye. I can't get that bracket to seat, because the white spring is pulling it out. Any suggestions? I think it's the same on the other side
