What gears?

There are some good things about the 2.5l/30rh setup despite the lack of power. Its very easy on the drivetrain and you can find and maintain the traction threshold in slippery stuff easy. Really nice combo for running around town too

I agree. I thought I was gonna hate it cause a keeping supposed to be a stick !! I gotta admit. I don’t hate it 😂

I ordered 4.56’s in Youkon brand. Went ahead and got the whole kit so I can do all the bearings and seals while I’m in there. I like the look and stance with the 32” tires so I think I’ll be happy since that’s the largest tire I will ever run. Today on the highway I was turning 2800ish at 60 mph but when the torque converter locked up and the RPMs dropped to 2200ish it immediately started to lose speed. So I think this gear set will be the answer to my prayers. I just want to be able to run and maintain 65 mph.

Have you set up gears before? Post up when you do - we love following along on gear setups.

Not on a jeep but yessir I have. I’ve done several. My H3 Hummer front and rear most recently. I’m still iffy on some of it but my dad owns a shop and has been a mechanic for 40 years. He’s pretty savvy on setting the crush sleeve and lash so I’ll probably look to him for guidance there. I hope to get them installed next Saturday and I’ll post results here.

Update ! I did the rear gears. Finished up about an hour ago. (Yes I know I need to do the front before I run 4x4 so no one have a melt down) went for a drive. First impressions. It has a hell of a lot more get up and go with the 255/75-17’s on it. I’m able to allow the torque converter to lock up at 65 mph and maintain speed on the highway now where I could not before. Driving around town will be a ton more enjoyable!! I can see low 4x4 having shit tons of torque now as well. I’ll report that back later in the fall when it’s not hot as satans ass crack here in south Arkansas and I get back in the shop to do the swap. All in all I am pleased. It’s still not going to break any land speed records but now I won’t get my ass ran over running to town if I wanna take the jeep. I feel like I need to adjust the shift on the transmission as it seems to shift odd from 2nd to 3rd now. It also seems the rebuild was warranted as I found significant putting in the inner pinion race and the bearing was beginning to show signs of failure. Explains the vibration and noise from the rear I was attributing to an incorrectly angled rear end with the lift. So that’s another plus. Just to recap. I’m runnin a 1997 2.5L with a 30RH 3 speed auto. Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear on 32” tires that I re-geared from 3.73’s to 4.56’s.

Good to hear how it turned out. I believe stock you probably had 215/75R15 or something similarly small like that. Around 27-28”, with 3.73 of course. With 32’s and 4.56 you are a bit deeper than stock, a couple hundred rpm at highway speed. Nothing that will ever be a problem, and makes up for the heavier tires and gives a bit extra on top of that to make it have a bit more pull than stock did. You should be good for a long time now.

Oh ! I almost forgot. I canned the idea of the Yukon gears after reading some bad reviews and opted for the National Drivetrain brand. I’ve read tons of great reviews on them from Jeep owners who have used them for swaps with good reports after many thousands of miles with zero issues. I will say they were extremely easy to set up. My 40 year mechanic father was really impressed that my millwright neighbor and myself only had to pull the carrier and reshim once and it was spot on. He told me we would pull it no less than 12 times before it was right 😂. So for now I can’t speak highly enough about the brand. Not to mention I only paid about $340 for the front and rear set. Now that was just the ring and pinion and the seals. No bearings (which I ended up buying locally for the pinion anyway for another $44) I’m glad I didn’t go for the 4.88’s like I started too. It would have been too deep. Tomorrow I’m picking up some 20” rims and a set of 33” Nitto’s for the rig. According to the Grim Jeeper calculator that’s gonna put me turning around 3300 rpm at 70 mph. Right in the sweet spot for the 4 pissy squirrel power band 😂.

Yessir. According to the stock specs it came with 28” tires and it did indeed have 3.73 gears. She was a 1/2 a dog on the highway with the 32’s lol

Did you correct your speedometer with a new speedo gear to match your tire size and gearing?

Not sure if the 30RH is the same, but with the 42RLE if the speedo is off, the shift points are off too.

I have not yet because I have not landed on the size tire I’ve decided to run yet. I do intend to very soon and wondered if that may be an issue.

Mine's a 97 4 cyl 5 speed and re-geared it with 5.13 from some great advice here and it was the best decision.
Jeep jumps in traffic now plus I can maintain 75 in 5th on the highway (I don't though) all on 33's too.
