What did you do to your TJ today?

An accumulation of sounds to convey what's on your mind.

I still prefer gestures. They piss people off more.

As I think I've mentioned, I'm going to be tearing apart the front end this fall when this horrid HOT weather cools off. But today was relatively cool for this time of year, so I thought I'd change out the front track bar as it isn't connected to anything else that I'll be messing with. This "15 minute" job ended up taking 3+ hours end to end. 1-1/2 hours was spent getting the castle nut off the frame end ball joint as Jeep was too fucking stupid/cheap to simply slather a bit of never seize on the goddamned cotter pin which just wasn't going to come out. Long story short, I broke the pin off, then Dremeled it even with the nut castelations on both ends, then used a socket and my 3 foot breaker bar to force the castle nut to cut the remaining bit off even with the threads. Once that was done, a newly purchased "pickle fork" made short work of getting that end off, the axle end was no problem, and the new one went on swimmingly - and yes, I put some goddamned never seize on the new cotter pin. That took no more than 30 minutes, the other hour was spent between taking 2 or 3 cool off breaks because I was overheating, getting the damn tire that I shouldn't have had to take off put back on in the dark, and picking up the 74 tools that were scattered all over the driveway.

And it turns out it was worth the effort - a subtle driver's side clunk is now gone. Ball joint end musta been worn...

I found one that i might buy! I made an account just for this. I've never owned a jeep so I wanted to get some opinions from you all if I could.

It's a 98 with a 5spd stick. Has 100k on it and was told it has been restored but mostly garage kept. I don't know anything about the engine but believe it has the 2.5L in it. I wont know for sure until I go back and check it out. These were just quick pics I took this morning. It looked pretty clean from first glance, just a few really cosmetic things to tinker with. I'm looking to putt around in it as is for now and maybe drive back and forth to work in the summer months (2 lane hwy @ 55mph limits). I live in the country about an hr from work so 90% is non-traffic. My main DD is a Tacoma but it's gotten heavy lately:

The guy is asking 6900 for the jeep but since I'm local and we have a work relation he said he'd lower it a bit for me. Is this a good deal? What do I need to inspect/ask about this jeep to make sure it's in good shape? Is this jeep a good pick for what I want to do with it.

Thanks for any and all information you guys can give me.

Look for frame rust ! , the rust starts on the inside of the frame so examine it real well.

Rust would be the biggest thing to look out for, especially on the frame. People have different ideas about what "restored" means, and in some cases it means painting over all the rust. Hopefully not in this case. The 2.5L will be slow on the highway with those larger tires, but if your commute has a 55 mph speed limit that might not matter to you.

It looks good. But drive it. The 2.5 can be slow with big tires and your idea of slow may be different than this jeeps idea of slow.

Next I would find a 4.0 and drive that to compare. Give yourself options. These jeeps aren’t going anywhere. Take your time

Just got back from a test drive and a more thorough look. Old girl is pretty sluggish, but i know it's not a racecar. I scoped the frame. Unfortunately there is some thick delamination going on about mid frame and back. I pulled out a piece almost 1/16 thick. I think that's a no-go for me. I just don't know how much is too much. It's not eaten through, but i don't know how much longer it would have, and I don't have time for a frame restoration right now. Almost joined the club. maybe next time.

Don't give up. There are still some very nice ones out there.
