I doubt this would hold up on the rocks, but an interesting idea. Though the times I suspected a problem with the diff/locker, I didn't really need to see it to know there was an issue.

What would be the purpose of this. Ill stick with metal, I know what's in there I dont need to look at it every day.

I was curious about performance differences, as I moved to the Ram covers (3/16") before getting some Barnett covers. Here's an AI summary, it honestly surprised me to even consider polycarbonate as even a contender (despite the look of them not being for me).

Cover TypeTypical ThicknessMaterialImpact Resistance (Blunt/Broad)Resistance to Denting/Puncture (Sharp Rocks)Best ForOther Notes
Polycarbonate (e.g., Clear Gearz or similar clear covers)~3/16" (0.187")UV-stabilized polycarbonateExcellent – Flexes and absorbs energy without shattering (performed well in hammer/drop tests on similar axles)Moderate – Can crack under severe point loads or repeated sharp hitsModerate off-road, visibility/inspection, lighter weightAllows viewing internals; lighter than steel; risks scratching/hazing or cracking in extreme rock crawling
1/8" Steel (similar to many stock or thin stamped covers)1/8" (0.125")Stamped steelModerate – Dents but rarely punctures immediatelyLow – Easily dents from rocks/trail impactsStreet/daily driving, light trailsCommon stock thickness on some Dana 44s; prone to denting, which can push into gears if severe
3/16" Steel (common aftermarket upgrade, e.g., some Ram-sourced or fabricated)3/16" (0.187")Fabricated/plate steelGood – Rigid, resists deformation better than thinner steelGood – Much better dent resistance than 1/8"Moderate to hard off-roadSignificant upgrade over stock; adds some rigidity; popular for balanced protection
