Transmission Noise (Help my Sanity)

Hi all,

Got a decent video of a noise that is driving me nuts. It seems to be getting louder and louder, and finally phone audio is able to pick it up.

2006 TJ, NSG370 6 speed. There is a tapping that seems to be coming from the transmission. If I so much as fart on the clutch pedal, the noise goes away. It probably takes a couple grams of foot pressure on the clutch to make the noise disappear.

However, with the clutch pedal untouched, the tapping in the attached video ensues
The tapping also occurs while driving just at a seemingly higher RPM.

Has anyone had any experience with a noise like this? Is this transmission just this noisy?

my guess would be throw out bearing ! when we bought my brothers 06 last year it sounded the same and we replaced the clutch with a LUK kit and it fixed it.
 
Yeah I’ll have to disagree with you on that. From previous experience on a mechanical type clutch linkage just resting your foot on the pedal would stop the noise. Maybe the hydraulic clutch is different.

A throwout bearing doesn't know if the clutch is cable or hydraulically actuated. Throwout bearings only spin when they're holding the clutch disk up & off the flywheel.

we replaced it all so I wont say 100% it was the throw out bearing but it was gritty sounding when we removed it and it don't do it no more ! could of been the pilot bearing too, but I ain't tearing into it all and not doing a whole clutch job while I'm in there :)

If the bearing is resting on the fingers as it does it is spinning. Thus you have some noise. If the bearing is bad you have a bit extra noise. Press on the clutch just a bit and you will change the sound of the noise. A mechanical connection will accentuate the possibility of changing the pressure. An hydraulic connection will require more than just resting your foot on the pedal.

The TJ's throw out bearing only spins when pressure is applied to the clutch pedal. At rest the clutch return spring holds the throwout bearing a 1/16"-1/8" away from the pressure plate and its fingers. If the return spring is missing or broken the throwout bearing will make slight intermittent contact with the pressure plate but that's not normal.
