Transmission jacks

Looks like my throw out fork came off the pivot so I will be pulling the transmission/transfer case. I've always made do with a floor jack and a flat plywood adapter in the past but thinking about getting a transmission jack this time. Anyone use this one? https://www.harborfreight.com/450-lb-low-lift-transmission-jack-61232.html

That particular jack behaves like a wiggly worm when bearing weight, even their better jack has managed to piss me off due to it's sloppy operation.

Me & XJ buddy have joint ownership of that jack. He bought it but didn’t want to store it after he was done. So I keep it most of the time and didn’t have to pay for it. It’s a nice system.

Anyhoo, it gets extensive use on our projects. I can’t imagine not having it.

I've used that jack in the past. It gets the job done... but barely. As stated above, it tends to move around. Last time I used it, it bent and ended up in the trash. For a one time use it should be fine.

I used that exact same jack for my transmission conversion and it worked extremely well, no complaints. I was able to easily sell it later to make its cost of use really cheap.

I have that jack, used it to remove transfer case to replace rear seal. Did fine for under $100 bucks with coupon. Paid for its self. Doing both at same time may a bit much for it size wise, if you split case from trans then should ok.

Well maybe I should get this one then https://www.harborfreight.com/800-lb-low-lift-transmission-jack-60234.html in case I ever need to pull the transmission/transfer case out of my Superduty. My biggest issue is storage. I have a big shop but it's jammed. Need to start thinning it out I guess.

I have no experience with that one, but I have their other one that is $300. 😲 I think it was right around $200 when I bought it 12 years ago!

As far as storage, it is able to roll under one of my work benches after flipping those little brackets on top to the underside until I need to use it. It has been verry handy for transmissions, bumpers, fuel tanks as well as my buddy has used it for several jobs. The one you linked will be fine, I'm sure and would store under a workbench as well if you have that ability.

I've been there once before with a regular floor jack and blocks of wood while working on my youngest's 4Runner and it was not ideal to say the least. I bought the transmission jack I have shortly after.

I used mine twice and the jack seals blew up.

I bought a transmission jack adapter from 911 racing and it works great but doesn't drop low enough to get the transmission in and out.

Pretty much just using a floor jack at this point. Or bench pressing...

I bought the cheap one and it has worked great. I like the fact that there are no hydraulics to leak or explode, and if you're up against something and don't know it you won't be able to force anything and break something, BTDT. I can't believe how easy my transmission went in. If I had one complaint it would be the strap which is a pain to use and once you are lifted into position there isn't enough room to open the ratchet and take the tension off so you have to remove the bolts on the sides. Not really a big deal though.

I used the cheap one when I did my AX15 swap. It worked ok. I didn't feel like the platform was shaped ideally to support the transmission case without rolling or sliding (putting the entire bellhousing in front of the platform was front heavy and wanted to tip, but putting part of the BH on the platform made it want to slide fwd), and didn't have enough tilt adjustment to line up the input shaft with the clutch and pilot depending on how far forward or back it sat when I positioned it. I seemed to remember having an easier time stabbing it when I just bench pressed it up there, but I'm not 25 anymore. In the end, I got the job done, and it cost me about $20 because I sold it immediately after finishing the job. If I was gonna buy one for repetitive use I would spend a little more for something nicer.

The tilt mechanism leaves a lot to be desired. I made some plywood shims to get the angle I needed.
