Hey guys, roommate got a 1997 tj with the 4.0/5spd combo that didnt run. Read the codes, poked around a bit and got it to run after replacing the distributor and coil. Now it idled smooth but wouldnt accelerate at all or go over about 15mph, backed it into the garage, shut it off and now it wont start again. It isnt throwing any codes but the check engine light comes on while cranking and the check gauges light comes on as soon as you stop cranking. Based on what i felt on the very short test drive around the block i would say the timing is severely retarded and yet it shouldn't be based off the service manual instructions.

Before you ask the standard stupid questions yes i set it to tdc on cyl #1 before starting, yes im aware that you cant adjust timing on this system, yes the plug wires are all attached in the proper firing order.

I'm at a loss here someone help me out.

You already know about setting the timing for No, 1 cylinder on the crank shaft balancer and mark the distributor for No.1, but you also need to put a pin thru the plate inside the distributor and the distributor body to orient the timing properly. Then align the distributor drive to the oil pump notch inside the block.
See the video below for further clarification.

Now you know it runs. First thing I would do is disconnect the battery to reset the PCM and try again with the start. Out of curiosity, what were the codes from the initial reading prior to replacing the distributor?

It is possible that the distributor is off by one gear tooth in either direction. It's also possible that the distributor position sensor is problematic (was it a brand new Mopar distributor?). TJs don't play well with non-Mopar sensors, as I have found out myself (and so have many others).

I would start with all of the basics first, and do a a complete and full tune-up if that hasn't already occurred. Then I would check the crankshaft position sensor, and even though the distributor was replaced, I would double-check the distributor position sensor. There are ways to check if both sensors are good, and I suggest a quick search-this will turn up all you need. After all of this, I would start checking spark at the plugs; fuel at the fuel rail on the manifold.

thanks a ton guys im thinking my manual wasnt clear enough as well as it completely skipped past the punch alignment step. im going to start with that probably tomorrow evening at this point. if that isnt it i'll start testing sensors. it definitely gets both spark and fuel but with its weird sputtering under load im gonna guess based on previous experience on my suburban that it's something timing related at this point.
i'll let ya know tomorrow.
