Wheeling Trip at Northwest Alabama Ride Park in Russellville, AL. A few of us decided to try out a new offroad park in Alabama for Father's day weekend.
Arrived Friday night after the park received A LOT of rain in the previous days and about an hour before we arrived. A Lot of rain.

Arrived around 7pm and after finding a relatively dry spot to camp and getting my 2WD pickup unstuck in the parking lot we headed out around 8:30pm to do some wheeling.
Right off the bat we found what we were going to be dealing with all weekend. Wet, Muddy, and slick (very slick) conditions. Really worked the jeep hard to get up the Powerline Trail which is right at the parking lot. With the excessive wheel speed and rpms required to get up the powerline hill, I was sure that the heat soak issue was fixed. We then headed to the top of the mountain to try and find some more rock vs Mud. At that point my jeep started mis-firing and went into limp mode (I think). This was not the typical heat soak issue where it would just shut down and not start up until it cooled off, it was misfiring but still running. Got it back to the camp (luckily it was mostly all downhill and didn't' require any major power/rpms). I brought my old PCM with me because when I drove my jeep to work the days leading up to this trip, there was a few times when the CEL started flashing (indicating misfire) but the jeep ran perfect and when I got home there was no codes stored. So I had a hunch that there was an issue with the PCM but couldn't figure out what and since I didn't change PCM because it was bad but changed it because I was just throwing every possibility at it, I knew my old PCM was most likely still good. I went ahead and reinstalled the old PCM and it fired up and ran perfect the rest of the weekend.

We headed back out Friday night around 11pm and wheeled to about 1:30am. We found a few good trails and there was plenty of winch cable pulled.

Sat morning:
We headed out and found a great creek trail right off the bat, it was tight and technical and all rock and running water, my kind of trail. At the very end of the trail, it was a steep muddy hill to get out. The clay was so deep and so slick that we had to winch all the way up, hindsight we should have just figured out a way to turn around and run the creek back down. We then found another good rock trail, but no traction was found, I had to winch twice to get up. After a few more muddy hill climbs and bouncing it off the rev limiter to make it up, we headed back to camp for lunch and to hook up with another buddy who was arriving at 2pm.

At 2pm we headed back out, 2 Jeep TJs, a Toyota based buggy, and then some random guy in the parking lot in a SxS asked to join. We hit a few really good rock trails and we hit some not so good mud trails and we finally came to this trail called Keegan's Way. I was leading and hit it and since I never seen this trail before I actually made it (1 in a million odds and will never make it again). The toyo buggy also hit it hard and made it. We then walked down with tree strap in hand to help the other TJ winch up and that is when I realized how freaking hard the trail actually was, there was 3 ft vertical steps after step after step in a vertical part of the trail, etc... The only saving grace is that the trail is relatively new so there wasn't any undercut yet, but a few of the holes dug out due to previous attempts were deep. I am not sure how I made it, but I will take it. Since I know how the trail is now, I will never make that trail again and I am not even going to try. We winched the other TJ up and then it was the SxS turn. He couldn't even get up to the actual hard part and after 4 or 5 attempts we yelled at him to stop and asked him if he had lockers (Nope), did he have a winch (Nope). How do you think you are going to make this hill (I just need a little more air in my tires). I said, Nope. He ended up turning around and heading back to camp, we did see him later and was happy to see that he made it back with no issues.

At the top of that Keegan's way hill we had a celebratory beer and snack and then headed off to go see the back side of the park which is supposed to have some caves you can explore. As soon as we started rolling the sky opened up and it dumped rain for about 45 minutes, water was running down the trails and every ditch, creek, ravine, etc... it dumped a lot of rain. We got to the bottom of a trail and came to T intersection. I stopped to look at map to see which way to go (Left), but I also looked right and something caught my eye. I yelled back that we were going to go left but I was going to go right to check something out. Heading right up the trail after pushing through some branches there was a 4 dr JL in a deep, deep water/mud hole, with the drivers side door open. I got out of my jeep and walked up to the edge of the water hole and sure enough there was people in it, the water was fender high, and the cab was full, they were sitting in the jeep drinking cocktails, in the water. I yelled to see if they needed any help and they said that the did but that they were so stuck that the previous group wasn't able to budge them. I asked if the previous group was SxS and he said yes, I told him that we will give it a try since our winches were probably rated a little higher and we had some extra weight. For the next 30-45 minutes were worked on getting them out and it was an experience that can only be told over a beer, these were some weird people who never should have been out there, not sure if they were just intoxicated, if they were tripping on something or what, it was weird. Anyway, we got them out and told them the easiest way to get back to camp and sent them on their way. We never saw them again, so I assume they made it back.

We then did some trail riding on the back side of the park where the caves were, it was OK, SxS would have a lot of fun back there, but it wasn't that great for us. We got back to camp around 8pm and had dinner. We then headed back out around 10:30 and found a great trail called Otto's Loop. Otto was the name of the guy who cut in all the trails that we actually had liked there so we felt we had to go hit the trail named for him. It did not disappoint, it was the hgihlight of the weekend, awesome trail. Very tight and technical and had some waterfall type climbs but nothing too steep. Got back to camp after hitting a few more cruising trails around 1:30pm

Sun Morning we decided to pack up and head home since we were out of dry/clean clothes. Once home, it took me a few hours just to powerwash the outside and underside of my jeep, still need to do a few hours of cleaning on the inside. It was a muddy mess.

Jeep:
The only issue that I am having is a long crank after the jeep sits for a while. When it is cold and has been sitting for a while it fires right up (so thinking it is not fuel regulator check valve) and if I stall it or turn it off and start it back up immediately it fires right up even when it is hot. But if I turn it off and let it sit 15-30 minutes it does a long crank and then will actually fire on the 2nd or third turn of the key. Any suggestions, let me know but I have new CMS, CPS, fuel pressure regulator, ignition rail, and plugs are relatively new. I may go ahead and change the injectors (possibly one is leaking during that time) and the plugs again. But other than the long crank, it never heat soaked, it ran great.

Park:
It is definitely geared more towards SxS and trail hiding and hill climbs. There are some cool rock trails and there is probably a few more that we missed, but not enough for me to choose to go there again. If I was invited to go with someone to ride there for a day and it had been dry leading up to it, I would probably go and enjoy the day, but I would not be the one to choose to go there. Hawk Pride is 30 minutes closer for me and so much better in my opinion that it wouldn't be worth passing Hawk Pride to go here. BUT, I am happy there is a new park and I am hoping that over time it gets developed a little more.

Capturing the mood of the NW Alabama Ride Park trip:
Friday night arrival.
2wd pickup not able.
Unload jeep and get trailer in place, not terrible.

Pack up and head out.
It was slick and muddy we soon found out.
Jeep PCM was shot it turns out.
Back out again and there was some winch line pulled out.

Eggs cooked on new grill, there was even some sausage and bacon what a thrill.

Our search for traction was about to start with a nice creek trail.
But it ended with a muddy slick clay hill, our attempt to make it up was a fail.
The ground was so wet that water gushed out, the winch was our only avail.
I think we both had a least one slip and fall, I hung from a winch line while my feet slid down the hill like it was on a steel rail.

1.3mph average for the morning, but it definitely was not boring.
Another rock trail was found but rocks were slick and muddy and winch was used to make progress.
The prospects of finding a good trail was slim and I am not sure if I was going to laugh or cry I must confess.

Back to camp for lunch, TJ arrives and off we go in search of the cooler that was lost, where it is I have a hunch.
No luck on this hunt we did fail, cooler was sacrificed to the gods of the trail
Keegan's Way how we made it is not clear, but it definitely deserved a celebration beer. SxS with no locker or winch, said he could make it if his tire had a little air.
I just laughed and wondered if he was serious, I think that was fair.
Off we go and down comes the rain, Beeker was soaked in seconds but did not complain.

Found a couple stuck in the mud, their jeep was buried deep and they were a couple of freaks.
Got them out of the hole where they were going to have to stay.
The guy wanted a hug to my dismay.
Beeker said to give them a map and send them on their way.
Pointed to the map and the guy said he understood okay.
Who knows where they are today.

Search for caves with cigar in hand.
Cruising the Redneck Riviera listening on the radio to a good band.
Back to camp and TJ cooked dinner, pretzel bites and burgers was a winner.

Wrestle with Idea of putting back on cold wet boots and clothes.
Putting them on was a struggle but off we go.
Glad we did because we found a loop named for Otto.
The man who helped cut and design all the cool trails we had yet to find.
If it had his name it surely would entertain.
The first part was down we go, slipping and sliding over rocks, mud, and roots was a little scary.
Down a few rock steps now do we make a right or left, which way would be fun but less hairy.
We stay on the loop and glad we did for the climb up was worth the trip.

Back to camp and off to bed.
Rise to the sun in the sky, time to load up and say our goodbye.

Sounds like a great trip...

After the NW Alabama ride park weekend I sent the Wranglerfix PCM back and they shipped me another. I am going to keep it as a spare.

I also found my long crank issue. There is a short hose between the fuel pump and the hard line. On the fuel pump side it is a 3/8" quick disconnect, the hard line side is a 5/16" quick disconnect. When I swapped the fuel pump at Golden Mountain back in November, in my haste I tried to install the hose backwards and tried to use brute force to install the 5/16" hose side on the 3/8" fuel pump side. I damaged the internals but was able to use a pick and get the orings back in the correct locations and all together and then installed the line correctly. Luckily it has lasted from beginning of November to July with a lot of wheeling during that time without issue. But it finally failed on me while I was driving around town, I was heading out to a buddy's shop when I started getting wet and smelling fuel (my fuel tank is mounted in the bed behind the seat). The line was leaking at the hard line connection and the wind from having no top installed was splashing the leaking fuel forward. Luckily I was able to get the Jeep home with the fuel leak and when I took off the short line the whole internals of that short plastic line on the 5/16" side just fell out and was all broke up (there was plastic in addition to orings), right at that moment is when I remembered the brute force install on the wrong side back in November and thus I knew why. Local O'reily's had quick disconnect to barb fittings and I installed a rubber fuel line between the tank and the hard line. Cranks up perfectly every time now. I never had a detectable fuel leak (amazingly) from this location but I think it was leaking just enough to bleed off the pressure and was so small that any fuel evaporated before creating a drip.

With my long crank issue fixed and with a pretty good run at North West Alabama Ride Park back in June I was fairly confident that all my heat soak, mis-fire, and long crank issues were solved, but I was wrong. The heat soak and long crank issues appear to be gone, but I soon found that I still have some mis-fire issues (see next post on windrock trip below).

Where is the next post!!!!

Windrock Trip (July 17-20, 2025) - I didn't take a single photo or video during this trip; however, my passenger did and if he ever uploads them to a share drive I will try to capture a few and add them to the below description. But for now, it is just text and your imagination.

Over the course of the weekend there was 4 rigs:
Me and Mark in my TJ on 38's
Jeff in his LH on 40's
Beeker in his toyo based buggy on 39's
TJ in his TJ on 37's

Thursday, 7/17/25
I arrived at the cabin around 12:00pm. I unloaded the jeep and rode up to the campground check in. I was able to check in and get the keys, etc… at that time. I took the connector trail from the campground back down to the General Store area and then to the cabin.
I then headed out on my own to hit some blue trails while I waited for the others to arrive.
I did T22 and T83, then headed back to cabin. Jeep worked good, no issues and I was happy!
Headed back to the cabin where I met up with Beeker who just got unloaded. Once Mark arrived we headed out to do a few trails.

Me and Mark in my TJ on 38s
Beeker in Toyo based buggy on 39s.

We did T15 and then went over and did T38.
I had to winch to get up over the big rock on T38. Beeker made it taking the LH line. The squeeze at the top both Beeker and Myself decided to take bypass and save it for a later day (we have both done it in the past and new it could go sideways quickly, literally sideways, there is pics of my jeep and his buggy laying on their sides in this squeeze). We then headed back to camp to wait for Jeff.
Jeff arrived and we headed into town to get some Pizza at Big Ed’s. Every resident of Oliver Springs must have been at Big Ed's that night, but that gave us time to catch up and have a few beers.
After Dinner we headed out to hit T44

Me and Mark in my TJ on 38s
Beeker in Toyo based buggy on 39s.
Jeff in LJ on 40” stickies

We went down T26 to hit T44.
We played in the rock gardens about ¼ of the way up, I was denied and backed out, Beeker made it.
Once we got to the big rock at the top of the long steep climb I had to winch, Jeff made it with ease and Beeker broke the front DS axle shaft on the rock. After we winched him up over the rock Jeff was able to pull him using kinetic rope through the rest of the rocky section. I had to winch one more steep ledge and then I watched Jeff crawl it while pulling Beeker, I was impressed and shocked. Those Treps work!! Once we got past the rocky ledges and to the rutted mud trail Beeker was able to get to the top under his own power. We headed back to camp and Beeker swapped his front shaft, finished up around 1am and then we sat around and had cocktails until 2am (some of them was 3am).
NOTE: at top of t44 I had a few mis-fires but it cleared itself up. I ran the codes back at the cabin and there was a loss of crank or cam position sensor pending code. I cleared it. Had no issues at all on Friday.

Friday 7/18/25
Jeff made us all a great breakfast then we headed out to do Walden’s Ridge
Me and Mark in my TJ on 38s
Beeker in Toyo based buggy on 39s.
Jeff in LJ on 40” stickies

Took pavement out to beginning of Walden’s Ridge.
Walden’s Ridge Gatekeeper
I made it up to the ridge section taking the right line but when coming across the ridge I got my rear diff caught on a spine rock and had to winch myself over that rock. Jeff and Beeker made it look easy with taking the right line and then coming across the ridge with no issues.
We finished the gatekeeper and dropped back down, then we came to the slab to climb back up. I made a few attempts and then winched. Same for Jeff and Beeker. We all winched the slab and we never winched again that day. The ridge past the slab is pretty mental having the drop offs on both sides, but it was dry and there were no real issues. We all made the off camber climb and then the drop at the end with no real issues. After that we took most all the harder lines and rock gardens we could find along Walden Ridge Trail. When we got to the big rock section about ¾ of the way through, I was denied and took the bypass but both Beeker and Jeff made it. It rained for a very short period while we were on this rock but the rain had no effect on the trail conditions. After finishing T75(Walden’s Ridge) we cut across the street and took T74 to G67. Where G67 ends and meets G66, we made a left onto the Gravel road out to the pavement and took Hwy 116 up to G50. We then took t50 to t88 to t49. T49 was a double black diamond and I heard that it was recently opened back up and had some tight technical spots. I was hoping for tight technical rocky spots, but ended up with a very grown in with vegetation climb (with a few rocky spots) to the top of a ridge. Then once on that ridge it was very tight, but tight between trees, with very few rocks. There was one rock that we had to make our way around but it was tight due to the lean, not due to other rocks. Happy we did the trail so that I now know what it is like, but I probably wouldn’t do it again, especially if I had a big rig with me (like Jeff’s who probably wanted to kill me due to all the trees he had to squeeze through).
From end of T49 we took T60 down to start of T90. T90 was short but fun. I drove Beeker’s buggy up through the first rock section and Jeff gave us all a show with lifting his wheels pretty high on his first hit of the rock climb.
We then headed back to the cabin taking pavement (hwy 116 to 330 to Hoskins Valley Rd)
TJ soon showed up and cooked dinner (steak and chicken fajitas)
After dinner we elected to NOT go out for a night ride, which was a surprise but I was happy to get some sleep after being up until 2am the night before.

Sat 7/19/25
Jeff again cooked us all a great breakfast and then he packed up to head home.
Rest of us headed out to do t39 (cadillac). I have done the end of Cadillac hill multiple times, I would just go down the rocky hill then turn around and climb back up (which I thoroughly enjoy) but I have never done the whole trail before.

Me and Mark in my TJ on 38s
Beeker in Toyo based buggy on 39s.
TJ in TJ on 37s

On our way out to the start of T39 my jeep starting mis-firing, check engine light start flashing. I turned the jeep off and fired it back up and it went away for about 30 seconds and then starting misfiring and check engine light flashing. I hooked up my scanner and P0300, 0301, 0302, 0303, 0305, and 0306. I cleared all the codes and it ran great the rest of the day.
NOTE: I am thinking I got a Cam/Crank Synch issue. I changed the cam position synch in July or August of 2024 and never did a relearn or resynch, so that may be my issue. I just ordered an Autel scanner to do the synch.

T39-
Most of T39 is just trail riding with some muddy rutted sections. One muddy rutted section we had to winch the entire length and it was not enjoyable. TJs rear locker made a few popping sounds while in the muddy section and it never really worked again after that. There was one rock section that was fun, it appears to be a new reroute around an impossible rock section. All three of us cleared this fun rock section, I was first and up it pretty quick but I did bump it pretty hard to get up the top part. TJ was able to crawl the entire top section and it was pretty impressive (his locker actually worked at this point, even though it was after the popping sounds). Beeker made it easily but did have to bump it a bit.
When we got to airplane hill, we looked at it and decided no way and that we would just take bypass. We also decided to eat lunch here and sat around and talked until we heard thunder in the distance and I said let’s get up this hill before it rains. Well we did make it up the bypass hill (which was a steep rutted clay hill and would have been miserable if it got wet) before it rained. On this steep bypass hill is where TJs locker quit working completely. Once we got to the bottom of the actual cadillac hill at the end of the trail, the sky opened up and it started pouring rain hard. The trail quickly became a creek and there was water running down, it was pretty amazing how hard it was raining. I made it up the hill with no winching but did have to give it a few bumps along the way. We had to winch TJ in a few spots but in 3 wheel drive it was impressive how much he actually did do, Beeker made it with no issues. At the top we talked with a few SxS riders and then I climbed under TJs rig to see if he had power going to his rear locker, he unfortunately had power right up to the diff, so we knew it was internal (which we expected with the popping). We decided to take TJs rig back to the cabin and then to head back out to do Rail Trail. While at the cabin the rain stopped and the sun came back out. I put on dry clothes, but they only stayed dry for a short time, it did feel good for that short time though.

T40 (rail trail)-
We went down T3 (we took the LHS down which is the easier side). We then took T40A down to the start of T40. Going down T40a had some pretty technical sections with some drop offs but going down was not that hard, I would go down it again. I may even try to climb it in the future.
At the beginning of T40 I made the LH line until I got to the tight tree section, at this section the rock in the middle just makes it impossible for me to get up and over so I just immediately got into a position where my tires where aligned so I could get a good winch up and over and just winched it. I noticed that my front DS shock lower bracket was broke at this point and the shock was just hanging. I also noted that the shock was bent and stuck in one position (which is why the bracket cracked) so I removed the shock. Beeker made a valid effort on the tight tree section but that middle rock caught his link and it was a no go and we winched him up and over. I had to winch a few more times to get up the rest of rail trail and even got myself into one spot where I was basically on my side and had to winch myself sideways using a snatch block off a tree to get my rear wheel out from under a rock, it was some creative winching and was interesting but I was worried there for a minute that I was going to have to go rent a jack hammer to come out and recover my jeep. Beeker made everything, he struggled a few times but eventually found a line. It was a very fun trail even after the heavy rains. At the top of T40 we headed over to T3 to climb up the harder side. The first rock garden we came to, I was able to pick a few good lines and made it through. Beeker being longer was having to actually climb over some rocks that I was able to get around and he broke his Pax side Front Axle shaft. We winched him through that rock garden and then he was able to climb up the easier side of T3 in 3wheel drive. From there we headed back to camp (it was about 8pm) and decided to throw our rigs on the trailer in lieu of swapping the shaft on Beeker’s rig.

Sun 7/20/25 - we packed up and headed out.
Issues with my Jeep that I know of at this time:
-Front DS shock is bent and lower bracket needs redone.
-Engine skid front bracket needs to be reattached (bolts came out on T40)
-DS rear spring came out of place and is not sitting in the lower perch correctly.
-Cam / Crank Synch and misfire issues.

Good - the long crank issue is completely gone. The install of the rubber fuel line between the fuel pump and the hard line fixed the issue. It fired up on first hit of key all weekend long.

Great summary, Vic! Awesome trip - thanks for having me along. Sounds like I missed the mud fest. 😟

I do have a bunch of pics and video of you and Beeker - none of me for some reason…🙂. I’ll post up a few when I get home today.

You would have liked the Cadillac Hill part of T39, the downpour just made it more of an adventure. The rest of T39 is worth doing once, but I probably won't do it again due to the mud and ruts so you didn't miss much there. T40 (rail trail) you have done with me in the past, but it has changed a little and is a little harder in a few sections. One of my favorite trails there!

What, no poem?

I have a few written, but they were just written for me.

Here is a short one to keep you looking:
Walden's Ridge
You're one the edge
You play with the mind
With jagged rocks that stick out like a spine.
Then down you track just to circle around and find a giant slab to climb.
Along the ridge of rock with steep ledges on both sides make the track so tight.
The ground disappears and you approach another drop off, it is another trick for the mind for the roll is just right.
Stop for a snack and to high five all around.
But the tale does not end because there is plenty more trail a bound.
Cruise along looking for rock as we go.
Then a brief rain shower and my mates leave me, where did they go?
The end is near and since we are on a ridge, down we must go.
Stay out of the ruts or on your side you will go.
Across the paved road, it's time for lunch, then to find more trail we will go.
