Does anyone have experience with a spare mounted rear storage rack? I want to makes rack that can hold a 5 gallon jerry can, 5 gal water can and cooler. I estimate about ~100-115 pounds, 10 gal * 8.5 #/gal + 20 for loaded cooler + 10 for rack. The rack would connect to the tire via a ratchet strap that goes around the circumference of the tire.

In your experience, can the spare and its mount hold this sufficiently? I mean tires support cars that should be fine. I have an aftermarket spare carrier made from 1.5” square pipe.

The other issue I’m thinking about is what happens if I have a tire fail and need to mount the rack on an unpressurized tire, will it still hold?

Anything else I should be thinking about?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and wisdom!

The issue is going to be the hinges and the sheet metal of the tailgate that the tire mount bolts onto, not the mount or tire itself

The TireBite Mounting Kit from Wilco Offroad is similar in concept, MSRP $159:

From the product description:

". . . keep in mind that this adds weight to the tire mounting unit so please check with the OEM of the tire mounting unit so you do not exceed the suggested or allowable weight. . . ."

The weight of a larger than stock spare tire is hard on the TJ factory tailgate hinges. Adding 20l of water (44 lbs.) and 20l of gasoline (32 lbs.) will add considerable stress and may damage the hinges.

As for the ability to cinch down this apparatus plus filled fuel and water cans on a damaged tire or one that won't hold air, common sense should tell you that it will not be an easy task if it is even possible.

Mine is an aftermarket that bolts to a rear bumper. Sorry I should have specified. Similar to this one

You did say that, which is what prompted me to say post a picture so folks would stop going off-point worrying about your tailgate hinges.
