Spare tire carrier recommendation

I used to recommend the MORryde/Exogate but in the context of recent experience I have to add footnotes:

1. for onroad use only
2. if used offroad, provide means of protecting spare from contact with terrain during high-departure-angle maneuvers - essentially a "spare tire skid plate".

If you drop a spare onto a ledge with a tailgate reinforcement kit, it will transfer a significant portion of the energy to the tub. The Flux option may be better since the hinges aren't tied together on the gate and will allow the gate itself to twist and take most of the damage, but if you pair it with tailgate armor, you probably want to make sure you have tub armor as well.

I will be running a naked tailgate in all situations except where it's absolutely necessary, which is pretty much just when I wheel with my kids (since I can't strap it to the floor with a back seat installed).

Being in the same boat as you after destroying my ExoGate, tailgate, and bending the tub, I would expect all gate mounted carriers to fail the same way if the spare lands on a ledge. The gate will buckle and the hinges will twist and the tire mount will tear and crack. The only solution that doesn't add physical bulk under the spare tire is to eliminate the tire from the gate.

I only run 2 lbs of air in my spare (I always have an air pump with me)... I've caught the spare on drops a couple times but so far so good... but you do make a valid point if you catch it hard with the weight of the Jeep. (and I'm also in the process of relocating and trimming the rear for my 5" stretch... didn't quite clearance it enough lol...)
... and yup.. those are JT control arms...

There is a lot about your setup that I would be catching and dragging all over the place. A deflated tire wouldn't add anything of value.

You will when the spare tire gets in the way of the trails you run. 🤫

shrug. The guy who turned me onto it has a KOH trophy and has run it on his trail rig for the last ten years or so. Ive had good luck with mine for 5-6 now maybe. Mine’s held 35-41.5” tires without rattle or problem. YMMV.

That tells me a few things, but not the things you intended to. 😉

I went with the Morryde about a year ago, it's worked perfectly carrying heavy 35's with no sagging and super smooth operation. So far I'm very happy with it... and best part... no more swing out rattle!!!!
Picture then, and picture now.

Did you have any issues with the third brake light contacts after installing this? You obviously removed the light itself, but did you remove the contacts on the tailgate?

Just installed mine and they change the pivot point when the tailgate opens. The contacts/buttons get caught on the tub pinch weld and get yanked out, even after moving the tailgate all the way towards the driver side. Still using my OEM third brake light since it'll still fit a 33".

Actually, mine didn’t have a third light when I bought it… So I didn’t mess with any of that…

What would this cost me ? I'd have to shop it to UK. But apart from that.

Hi Roger, pricing for these items is listed on the website. I would need to figure out the shipping. I should have stock the hinges and carrier here in the coming weeks. If you are interest in getting a shipping quote shoot me an email to fluxoroad@gmail.com Thanks!
