Spare in cargo area

No matter what you decide please make sure it is secured well. I cant imagine a 35 or 37 inch wheel and tire flying forward in an accident..talk about a headache

I was thinking about a basket over top if flat to keep weight down, bad idea?
I built a platform in my LJ the uprights fit into the rear seat tracks the deck fits down on top. I use 4 turnbuckles from the factory tie down points up to the deck. There are tie down points on top of the deck bolted to where the turn buckles attach. I can put my camping gear on top of the tire if need be. It will all come out in less than 10 minutes and I can put the seat and seatbelts back in. I raised it up enough to fit a quart of oil standing upright underneath. I keep spare parts, tools, air hose and tire repair, and 2 fold up chairs underneath. I can get some pictures tomorrow if you are interested.

I mounted my 33'' spare upright like in this Willys below. I used a 1'' steel square tube bolted in to the hardtop mounting holes in the tub. I then used a 2'' wide ratchet strap to go over the tire and secured it to the rear seat mounting brackets. I ran another 2'' ratchet strap around the tire and attached it to the 1'' square tubing with some motorcycle straps (soft loops). Ran it all summer and the tire never moved even during wheeling trips. I like the tire in this manner because I could still run my Tuffy security cargo enclosure behind the tire and a small Plano footlocker in front of the tire. Second pic is my setup. Crappy pic but it's the only one I have of the setup.

Here are some pictures and what I did. I attached tie down hock front and rear. Rear in factory tie down bolt hole. The fronts I think I used nutserts through the floor where there is a doubler underneath. I used a sheet of 3/4 marine plywood ( so I didn’t have to sand it). I cut the two uprights and contoured them to fit in the factory seat channels. I added angle brackets front and rear. The front one has 2 nuts welded to each to bolt the front panel on. The rear has a piece welded across the angle with a hole for the turnbuckle. The front board has a 1 x 2” attached to support the deck from bowing. The top deck I used welding rod to get the contour to the sides as a pattern. I attached 1x2” to the under side of the top running front to back and two shorter pieces at the front to sandwich the uprights. The 2 front tie downs on top attach through to the turnbuckles underneath. The rears are bolted to the corner bracket and turnbuckle attaches to the bracket. The sides are put in the top goes on,2 rear bolts go in. The turnbuckles are installed then the front is bolted on. Then all the bolts are tightened. I built it tall enough for a quart of oil to stand up in inside my spares box to minimize leakage. You may notice the front board sticks up about 3 inches this is to prevent a cooler or other gear from sliding forward when I do a rolling camping trip. I am able to fit a small cooler and backpack between the seats and the deck for access on the trail.

I have carried the spare in the back when in Moab and tie it down with ratchet straps, if I was going to carry it full time I would add a plate underneath and run a bolt through the spare to the deck.

The front board also does not go all the way to the sides this was intentional by doing this I was able to build everything with one sheet of plywood including the spares box.

In that box I am able to fit nut, bolt & electrical connector assortment, cam, crank sensors, fuel pump, oil, trans & brake fluid, belt and tensioner some fuel hose, tape epoxy etc.

here is what I ended up doing. The 37 lays flat in the tub. I used the existing treads that were used for the seat belt bolts and dropped eye bolts in. in the rear I used the child seat restraints.

If you measure (and drill) carefully, you can add a tie down in the back.
There's an unused nut on the rear nutplate under the floor. One on each side.
Mine's an LJ, YRMV.

Wanted to follow up since I was able to get some pictures. As stated in my last post this is how I run my spare upright in the tub. The bar with ratchet strap is enough to keep the spare from moving even during hard wheeling but I added the additional strap over the tire attached to the rear seat mounts for added piece of mind. I wanted to run it upright so I could still run my Tuffy security trunk as well as still have enough room for a small Plano box between the front seats and spare tire.

The 37 fit in there nicely! Did you have to remove the side brackets for the rear seat that were bolted to the tub?

I found pics of these from a few years ago. Not sure who it was that made this mount. I thought about doing this and then mounting a single seat on the other side for a third passenger.
