Hey guys so i’ve read all the threads and comments on the reverse light switch location but just wanted to make sure. I’ve read it also depends on the trans. Just wanted to know which one it is i’m looking at lol. Thanks for the help in advance! The one with the read circle or the second one with the it unplugged.

Your profile says you have a '98 with the 4.0 which uses the AX-15 transmission. The below drawing is correct for an AX-15, this shows the passenger side of the transmission. The driver's side showing the clutch slave cylinder definitely looks wrong for an AX-15 that only has its fill port above the clutch slave cylinder. So I might be looking at it wrong but it makes me think your TJ's original AX-15 transmission might have been swapped for a different one at some point.

I can only suggest using a continuity checker/ohmmeter to see which of them shows a connection between its wires from inside the transmission when the shifter is in Reverse.

Yea i’ve read that on other threads but there is nothing on the passenger side. These pictures are from the drivers side.

Yeah I'm totally unable to figure that out, I even checked to see if original AX-15 might have been swapped for the newer NV3550 or NSG370 but they don't look right either. Someone smarter than me will have to provide your answer.

Maybe as suggested above just use an ohmmeter (multimeter) or continuity tester to see which connector makes a connection between its two wires when the transmission is shifted into Reverse.

Here's some photos of my AX15.

Here you can see the fill plug aft of the slave cylinder about halfway up. The casting features look to match up with your photo. Don't know what that red thing is but it looks to be where the fill plug is.

Here's the driver side...you might have to zoom in a bit but the reverse light switch is halfway up with a black cable coming out of it and running up near the shifter.

The connector you showed that was unplugged is your 4x4 indicator switch.

Oh so the red one isn’t the reverse light switch? I unscrewed it more and oil was coming out.
