Having recently gotten this glorious TJ, I realized the stock headlights are really bad. Now, I wanted to keep it close to "stock" as I could, so I did not want to go for the LED headlights. Seeing a few posts on this forum, I decided to go for those Toyota FJ45 OEM Headlights. I got those off some shop, for rather cheap ($50 for the lights, harness and all).
Now, I am not a car guy (I come from tech). So doing anything under the hood seemed daunting. But after looking at a few posts here, and just - well - looking at it. I realized it's not that hard.
I am using this post, just to show off how I did it - feel free to roast me in the replies.
Old ones:
New ones. (yeah I know, you cant really see the difference here):
Now, here is how I hooked it all up under the hood. I was mainly concerned how to attach my harness to the battery. But that turned out alright. The positive I just attached to the relay box, and the negative straight on the the battery terminal.
Some cable management shenanigans:
OH, here is where I attached the relays. I could not really find a better place:
My last thing I need to figure out is how to encase the connection between the harness and the headlight connector cable:
I was really pleasantly surprised how well these work. I did not ever replace the bulbs that came stock. (I know there are brighter ones I can get). The last thing that is left is to just aim the correctly - and for this I am waiting for a new headlight mount as this one has busted plastic.
Hope this post, encourages others to go and do the same mod. It's so worth it, and your TJ gets to keep that glorious (almost) stock look.
