watched an interesting series of events play out yesterday. I live on a 1/2 mile circle out in the burbs, I was coming home from work and as I turned onto my street a noticed a small cardboard box on the side of the road ripped open, very odd/out of place on my street. As I rounded the circle to my house I then see a minivan pulled over on the side of the road just past my property line in front of my neighbor's house with its hood up. I parked my car & walked up to the van & could see it had an out of state temp tag, again this looked very much out of place. I wasn't sure if I was observing the opening salvo of a home invasion or other such fuckery, so I rolled back inside & texted my neighbor to ask her if she knew who they were, she said she wasn't home & had no idea. At that point I went back outside & the van was gone, so I figured maybe I was wrong, perhaps they really were broken down or overheated... so I went for my afternoon walk, walking in the opposite direction. I come up around the other side & see the van was again pulled over, hood up, only this time it was about 3 houses further up. Now I'm sure it's some kind of scam. I walk out the top of the street to the main road to continue my walk & a few minutes later my neighbor texts me back saying she got home & two cops just pulled up & they're talking to these guys, I guess someone else on the street saw what I saw & called 911. So I turn around to walk back to see what's happening and as I turn onto my street a cop is rolling up to the stop sign so I ask him if he was there for the van, he said yea, just a couple Amazon gig workers delivering stuff & their car overheated & they're waiting for their brother-in-law to come and pick them up. I said are you sure, then I explained how they moved from one spot to another with no problem, and he basically blew me off. Ok.
I continue to walk back towards my house, this isn't 30 seconds later, when I see the van whip around the other end of the street & pull up in front of the house across the street from me, passenger gets out, runs up to the house, grabs a box, runs back to the van & they bolt back out the way they came. I guess the engine was sufficiently cooled off
My neighbor that I had been texting with comes out of her house & she's like holy shit, the FedEx truck literally just put that box there a minute ago, then the guy who's brand new phone just disappeared comes outside & he's like wtf just happened.
These brazen mother fuckers obviously had knowledge that this delivery was being made at a certain time, set up the whole scam, sweet talked a couple cops into leaving them alone, then snatched this box right out from under their noses within a minute of them pulling off the street. It was apparent to me that the empty box I saw earlier was most likely another Iphone or the like, these guys aren't steeling Amazon boxes containing $9 dog collars or toothpaste, my guess is they're buying tracking numbers from some scumbag inside FedEx so they know exactly when and where to be.
Epilogue: about an hour later the police showed up to the neighbor's house that lost the phone to take a report. I went over to offer what I knew, & I asked him if he at least had taken the information from these guys when they were there, he said yea but it was all fake, they had Amazon vests & all & their hood was up, they were very convincing
, well no shit Sherlock
