watched an interesting series of events play out yesterday. I live on a 1/2 mile circle out in the burbs, I was coming home from work and as I turned onto my street a noticed a small cardboard box on the side of the road ripped open, very odd/out of place on my street. As I rounded the circle to my house I then see a minivan pulled over on the side of the road just past my property line in front of my neighbor's house with its hood up. I parked my car & walked up to the van & could see it had an out of state temp tag, again this looked very much out of place. I wasn't sure if I was observing the opening salvo of a home invasion or other such fuckery, so I rolled back inside & texted my neighbor to ask her if she knew who they were, she said she wasn't home & had no idea. At that point I went back outside & the van was gone, so I figured maybe I was wrong, perhaps they really were broken down or overheated... so I went for my afternoon walk, walking in the opposite direction. I come up around the other side & see the van was again pulled over, hood up, only this time it was about 3 houses further up. Now I'm sure it's some kind of scam. I walk out the top of the street to the main road to continue my walk & a few minutes later my neighbor texts me back saying she got home & two cops just pulled up & they're talking to these guys, I guess someone else on the street saw what I saw & called 911. So I turn around to walk back to see what's happening and as I turn onto my street a cop is rolling up to the stop sign so I ask him if he was there for the van, he said yea, just a couple Amazon gig workers delivering stuff & their car overheated & they're waiting for their brother-in-law to come and pick them up. I said are you sure, then I explained how they moved from one spot to another with no problem, and he basically blew me off. Ok.

I continue to walk back towards my house, this isn't 30 seconds later, when I see the van whip around the other end of the street & pull up in front of the house across the street from me, passenger gets out, runs up to the house, grabs a box, runs back to the van & they bolt back out the way they came. I guess the engine was sufficiently cooled off 🤦‍♂️

My neighbor that I had been texting with comes out of her house & she's like holy shit, the FedEx truck literally just put that box there a minute ago, then the guy who's brand new phone just disappeared comes outside & he's like wtf just happened.

These brazen mother fuckers obviously had knowledge that this delivery was being made at a certain time, set up the whole scam, sweet talked a couple cops into leaving them alone, then snatched this box right out from under their noses within a minute of them pulling off the street. It was apparent to me that the empty box I saw earlier was most likely another Iphone or the like, these guys aren't steeling Amazon boxes containing $9 dog collars or toothpaste, my guess is they're buying tracking numbers from some scumbag inside FedEx so they know exactly when and where to be.

Epilogue: about an hour later the police showed up to the neighbor's house that lost the phone to take a report. I went over to offer what I knew, & I asked him if he at least had taken the information from these guys when they were there, he said yea but it was all fake, they had Amazon vests & all & their hood was up, they were very convincing :ROFLMAO:, well no shit Sherlock

After having an Amazon shipment stolen, if possible I have packages delivered to a business like a UPS store, FedEx drop point or Amazon locker.

knock on wood it hasn't happened to me yet, & this was the first incident I'm aware of in my neighborhood though I suspect there have been others. If I didn't see this happen right in front of me odds are very good I wouldn't have ever known about it, super quiet street, neighbors keep to themselves, it's weird but I came from a very loud/friendly place before moving here over 25 years ago & I swore I had entered the Twilight Zone. I've not only grown used to it but I prefer it that way now

Anyway I've recently (within the past few months) taken to doing what you do just as a precaution. I get some stuff delivered to my office which is pretty straightforward because the deliveries are limited to business hours & there's usually someone here, I've gotten some delivered to an Amazon Locker right up the street, the rest still goes to my house. After yesterday I may be rethinking that... though like I said these guys weren't plucking any old boxes, they were specifically there lying in wait for this exact one due to its value.

We live in a fucked up world where these are the things we have to think about.

Never had it happen. The floor of my porch cannot be seen from the street because of shrubbery. I'm good unless the shrubbery pirates hit my house.

I've been wondering if a bunch of these people work for the companies, amazon or the delivery companies, and do this on their time off.

set a glitter bomb box out. If that shit starts happening here I an sending all my Amazon boxes to my UPS store.
Glitter bombs are stupid. Black powder with nails bomb is the right answer but in 2024 that just won't fly. I'd go with dog or cat shit triggered by a small powder charge. Something like the prepper's 12 ga shell alarm blank.

Someone sent one to our office once. Don't underestimate the misery of glitter EVERYWHERE.

People suck, and things just keep getting worse.

It’s really odd what goes on in my small(ish) town of about 3500 people . We have a UPS drop box on the court square, it’s about the size of the old USPS boxes. Well, people with larger packages will just set them on top of the drop box or beside it. I have seen packages set there over night and haven’t heard of a problem yet. With that said I find it very hard to believe people aren’t messing with them…

I feel very fortunate that we picked the little town that we decided to move to. Our little neighbor hood is very quiet and kinda out of the way. I still try and stay aware.

problem is they mail Iphones & whatnot to small towns too, if I'm one of these enterprising scumbags I might be thinking they're the perfect new frontier, filled with unsuspecting people that think they're hidden & leave their doors unlocked... pretty sure that's what brought them to my neighborhood, that and the tracking number they likely bought. If memory serves this is the first crime I've been made aware of in my neighborhood in my quarter-century living there, 2 days ago I thought my chances were pretty low too, so yea I'd stay aware.

This problem is getting worse, more prolific & more widespread by the day. I'm pretty late to this part of the party but it seems very apparent that the delivery companies themselves have people inside contributing to the problem. Could be the drivers themselves, or someone with access to all tracking numbers for everything they pick up from a given supplier, like Apple. Whoever is involved, these guys I saw 100% had the information and knew this phone was being delivered to that particular house within a specific time window, the original spot I saw them setup gave them a perfect view of the entire property.

It should not only be legal, it should be condoned to be able to shoot porch pirates in the face and hang their dead corpses on a fence post as a warning to other porch pirates.

From my buddy in Jamaica's facebook page: "Stealing is a bad occupation in Jamaica. Here the majority of the people have nothing. Taking nothing from those who have nothing is unforgiving and will leave you handless."
