Plow counterweight ideas?

You can increase how well it handles the payload but you can’t increase your payload/GVWR.

Any extra weight in stronger components reduces your payload. GVWR stays the same.
Yes, you can. GVWR is calculated by the manufacturer in stock form based on the stock components ... frame, axles, tires, length, etc. Most of the things people do to their vehicles wont change how much load can be safely carried. But to stretch the logic so its obvious if you replaced a vehicle frame with one that was fully boxed, stretched it, went from half ton to one ton axles, installed heavier springs, heavier steering and drive components, changed to load range E tires, etc, and did it all correctly the functional GVWR would definitely be higher. No calculating by how much but definitely higher.

An F250 Tremor and an F350 Tremor are literally identical trucks other than sticker and badging. Who do I talk to in order to uprate the F250 to the capacities of the F350?

As creeping death pointed out if it’s in his driveway it really doesn’t matter, some states don’t care, some may care, some insurance companies may care so it may not really matter but the GVWR is the rating no matter what you do.

Times where I know they can uprate GVWR is in situations where they make a limo out of Cadillac car and such, but they do some actual paperwork to make that happen.

The chassis and suspension are literally identical? Literally the same springs and spring rates?

Then Ford published a different rating to make free money on the F350. It’s a scam.

They also have a derate to 10,000 lb option. My understanding is it’s not that easy to have that removed once sold. But it’s needed due to some state laws. Still the same truck.

De-rating can allow for legally towing a heavier trailer. An 11,000 lb GVW truck (what most 350/3500's used to be) towing a 16K lb GVW trailer requires a CDL. Drop the truck to 10K and you can legally tow the same trailer without a CDL.

26K is the CDL limit for a truck. 10K for a trailer. When I buy a new trailer I have the dealer change the rating down to 10K or 9,999. That being said I’ve never had a problem with the scales even when pulled in for inspection. They anal about gas tax so I had to go IFTA with anything over 1 ton. Because I’m considered agriculture I get to slide on some thing. If I’m carrying a load of bees the scales never pull me in and highway patrol will not pull me over if I’m speeding or in the wrong lane. HP just yell at me over their loudspeaker to slow down or move over..

The combined GVW of truck and trailer must be under that 26K number in order to be under CDL. A 14K lb GVW trailer pulled by an 11K GVW truck does not require a CDL. An 8K lb GVW trailer pulled by a 19K GVW truck does require a CDL.

You must have a commercial driver license (CDL) to drive any of the following vehicles:
  • All single vehicles with a manufacturer's weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more
  • All trailers with a manufacturer's weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, and a combined vehicle's gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or mor

So a trailer up to 10K loaded is okay and up to 26,000 lbs combined is okay. Id hate to cross a scale betting on one pound though.

I have the same front air bags installed
Aired up to 50psi, and chain adjusted to allow the plow to rest in float mode. What plow model is that if u dont mind me askin?? Curious what weight is

My Western plow must be heavier. It lifts the ass end off the pavement and I lose SOME traction. It became very obvious on first use. I suspected the short wheelbase might need counterweight before testing it

Took 3 of us to lift that plow off the trailer. Someone had it in use on a TJ because I got the unimount, and harness with it. This is a common setup as 3 were for sale within an hour drive, and its been around 20+ years

Just needed some new Grade8 hardware I sourced from my local McMaster Carr. Im not sweatin the GVWR as this isnt leaving my driveway

It was an old Meyers home plow. Hydraulic over electric. I've since graduated to a mid-size chevy colorado, with heated seats, and it has a Snowex LT7200 (with down pressure). This plow only weighs 300 lb. with the headgear!

That's very light, nice!!!

Back in the day, I knew a few people with CJ's equipped with snow ploys (it was how we got ours actually!). Nearly every single one would have about 10-15 sand bags in the trunk, with some salt bags on top (that were used as needed). Your plow seems to be WAAAY far out compared to the ones we used to have, at least if my aging memory serves me correctly. This is likely compounding your leverage problem.
