Piss & Moan Table

I can’t understand why the delivery person doesn’t ring the doorbell when a package is left on the porch. I mean when it’s 110 degrees outside some packages need to be brought in ASAP. But apparently ringing the doorbell to alert me of the delivery is no longer standard protocol.

Luckily, most of the time the dogs let me know.

I was going to say that we prefer they not ring the door bell, because it makes all hell break loose. Our girls hear them coming up our street.

Both deliveries I had today did.

Most ring and run.
UPS guy always does.
Some place the packages hidden behind our plants on front stoop. Some just toss from the street and let them land close.
It’s always hit or miss because of the turnover of the drivers. My biggest issue is that we travel a lot and some deliveries can take up to 2 weeks to arrive. The wife orders shit from Walmart and very often the order shows up in an hour or less. I don’t know how they make any money delivering 1 bottle of shampoo.
One good thing with not seeing the delivery people is that there is no tipping opportunity for them.

Well crap...

The gal that did most of the grunt work in creating my Ma'at garden moved away. Found another one, calls herself the "garden girl", twice as expensive, but overall even better than the first one. Wife was perusing the local arrests last nite and found garden girl's mug shot for grand theft auto...

Its *so* hard to find good help these days - and its particularly hard to find someone who will stop by once a month for a couple or three hours to clean/prune/primp, re-pot and plant, etc, etc for a small yard and smaller garden. Everybody wants to do installs, or mow & blow - and for big yards/commercial at that. We might be willing to give Garden Girl a second chance, but even if we are, she's probably gonna be in jail for awhile.

You're going to have to put on your big boy skirt and handle it yourself

I pay my lawn guy $7200 cash a year to maintain the yards at 4 of my rentals and my house. I cringe every time my Wife leaves out the pay envelope for him. I have two rentals that I still maintain myself. One has no lawn and the other one I maybe get around to cutting the grass when I think of it. He cuts every Fri like clockwork and trims the bushes. I realize it’s money well spent in the long run he but damn that’s still a lot of money.

My weather station is at 100F and 45% RH. So 113F heat index.

I put the portable AC in the garage. I bought it last year off craigslist when our new AC thermostat crapped out one weekend when it was 95+. I fired it up since the kids want to learn oil changing and I have some brakes to put on the daughters car. I use the 3rd car garage door and pack the gaps with a couple rolls of old carpet and some plastic.

High today 102F. High tomorrow 105F with a chance of rain? Sauna conditions.

The garage is at 76F, but humid. The concrete should cool down tonight and hold it in for working tomorrow.

My weather station is at 79F and 20% RH . My dew point is 34F. I don't know about humidity other than it sucks.
Hopefully you can get you garage usable for the brake job. Hang in there man !

112.3F temperature swing here from low to high this year...so far.

Yesterday our "feels like " temperature was 117ºF. Because it was 117ºF.

In the shade.

If you could find any.

I know folks say it's a dry heat, and areas with high humidity are worse, but last time I was visiting family on the Gulf Coast it was 95º and 70% humidity and my thought was "It's 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. This ain't bad at all". I was able to work outside all day on the covered patio without collapsing from heat exhaustion. I was soaking wet, but alive. My realization was 95 degrees is not hot, with our without humidity, but then again I am acclimated to much higher temperatures now.

I lived in Phoenix for a while in the early 80s. I could deal with the heat during the day but what killed me is that with all the concrette it would not cool down at night. Where I live now it will get into the 100s during the day but cools down to the low 70s at night. Only on rare occasions will it be in the 80s at night. We are in a short cooling spell now and the low is predicted to be 57. I’m a Desert Rat and anything over 20% humidity kills me.

Yeah, with all the concrete and urban expanse, during the summer months the overnight temperatures are in the low 90s. That’s one helluva way to start the day.

And on top of the brutal temperatures, we’re now rated as the 4th worst in the nation for air quality. Used to be the desert southwest was the place to go for clean air.

When I lived there my job was to put up signs at new development sites. Many were agricultural fields that had flood irrigation. Digging holes in those humid conditions was a bitch. I learned to start at 4am to try to beat the heat.
My home was at 7th St and McDowell. It’s a freeway off ramp now. When I go through Phoenix now I don’t recognize the place. Not much different than LA.

I pretty much stay inside this time of year with the ac on. If I go out I crank the ac in the mustang, or the corvette. If it's not raining at night which is rare this time of year I'll put the top down in one of the cars and take a ride.

I made the mistake of going to a corvette event during the day. There was some walking involved, I thought I was going to pass-out I had to leave.

I had an AC unit go out the other day. I did not want to deal with it and called the company who installed it 7 years ago. Turns out they were bought out by a different firm. Most of the time with a unit this age it’s a capacitor failure. I figured service call fee, 1 hour labor plus parts. $300 max.
First thing the tech asks me is if I’m a member of their “Service Club”. First red flag. He opens the access panel puts on some type of meter and shows me a red light on it. Says my compressor motor is bad. Then tells me I need a new capacitor, contactor and compressor rejuvenation kit. All for just $1500. $1325 if I was a “Club Member”. $500 for the capacitor, $500 for the contactor and $500 for the rejuvenation kit. I told hime to close everything up and send me an estimate in writing. Then he said he could just replace the capacitor for $500. I nicely asked him to pound sand. Luckily he did not charge me anything.
I went on line and bought the genuine factory capacitor and contactor for $40 with shipping. The factory compressor rejuvenation kit is $40 and is just an extra capacitor.
Even with a generous markup and no more than 2 hours of labor $1500 seems excessive.
I can’t believe people fall for this shit.
I’m getting to the age where I don’t want to mess with some repairs on my rentals and I have reliable and reasonable people for every trade except HVAC. I guess I need to look harder.
