Piss & Moan Table

I broke the 2 screwdriver parts and the tiny pry bar within a month and can't be bothered trying to get it fixed, I'm sure it'll just happen again. The pliers are great, and the knife/saw are very sharp and stay sharp, and I love the diamond nail file. So I'm still happy but... Could be beefier.

What do you think would be in a jeepers Leatherman?

Valve stem tool?
Pid took for fixing synthetic lines?
What else lol

Reaming tool for tire plugs maybe
I can't think of anything else that would fit into a folding tool of the top of the old bean!

Now you're REALLY reaching, swinging, and missing wildly!

WHAT????
What ever... that's not what I said, and you know it.

So does this mean that anyone who got the JAB only did it because everyone else was doing it?

Nobody cares if you're buying it or not!

Oh my, aren't we getting SHRILL!!!

A "Gerber" or a "Leatherman" just doesn't replace that toolbox full of tools. A PHOOOOOONNE doesn't replace real equipment/devices that do their functions far better.

But you can carry a leatherman in your pocket , ( Or strapped to your leg :p ) chances are high you don't roll your Snap on chest around everywhere you go. Of course the real tools are better , but it doesn't matter if they are not with you. Smartphones are the equivalent of the automatic transmission , I can't buy a new Chevy truck and get a NV 4500, or a CH465 . It sucks but that's the way it is.

Amazingly, I've never needed my tool chest anywhere but at home. Toss a few tools in the car and off I go. I've lived 64 years without needing internet in my pocket, much less too small of internet that is overpriced with a sucky UI.

My original reason for refusing the smartphone is still my main: Too small, too limited, ENTIRELY too expensive, and lack of any real need. I didn't see the point of the thing in 2007, and I don't see the point of it now. It was only much later that I became aware of the "rest of the story" and started seeing them for the EVIL that they are. Another refusenik - a "computer person" like myself, said he though the whole concept was "stupid and evil". He's not wrong. More and more people are figuring this out - including @Chris .

I find it interesting the amount of rabid and vehement apologetics I get for this thing - as well as "Social Media" (another pointless idea I've never participated in). A quote from an article on this subject: "I have been surprised by the almost visceral response some people have when they discover I don't own a smartphone. Some even take it as a personal affront. It registers as a challenge to the myth of inevitability, the myth that one needs a smartphone to thrive in contemporary society." The article continues: "I can only conclude that I have scratched the skin of a technological fundamentalism that, like other fundamentalisms, wishes to monopolize a whole society, and, therefore, cannot tolerate the smallest difference of opinion."

Pot calling the kettle black. The author, and you, Zorba, seem to have thin skin and be offended by those of us who own smartphones and find them useful. Who's the fundamentalist again? ;)

{poking the bear is fun!}

Not I. I don't give a damn what people do - AS LONG AS - they don't try to inflict it on me. The whole world is going straight to Hell in a hand basket with the result that I'm *EXPECTED* to participate in the smartphone lunacy - because "the world has moved on" and "everyone but Zorba has one"; which are NOT acceptable reasons. Its like everyone is eating shit, and telling me how good it tastes.

To quote:
You can't expect society as a whole to stay in the dark ages just because you choose to.
... which is just another way to say "everybody is doing it" - even though the person who posted this denies it. The societal costs, mental health costs, monetary costs, and yes, the spiritual costs of these things - and the world wide obsession with catering to them - is enormous. All for an overpriced gadget that doesn't do anything particularly well, fulfilling a non-existent need in most cases. Not to mention that it didn't really even exist 20 years ago, yet people act like the world would stop turning if they didn't have one.

Jobs introduced his gadget in 2007. By 2010, the "expectation" was already in place, although I didn't notice until 2016 when I had it called to my attention rather rudely. Most people know the problems with these things by now, but they insist on using them anyway, and inflicting them on everyone else because "its necessary" (Bullshit) and/or "its so conVEEEEEEEEEENient" - which is also bullshit as I can't imagine anything that's more of a pain in the ass than a smartphone. Pain in the ass to its user, and everyone else around them. If I had a nickel for every time I was inconvenienced by someone else's fucking PHOOOOOONNE, I'd have a villa on my own private Greek island somewhere.

"Do this", "Do that", "Do whatever" - RIGHT from your PHOOOOOONNE!!! Its always "RIGHT from", never just "from" or "with". But why the Hell would I even want to? But, as always! It's all about the PHOOOOOONNE!!!

So the bear has been poked! ;)

Earlier this week I was trying to book a rental car using my computer. Every time I tried to select a car it would reset the site.

Pulled out my iPhone and had it done in no time.

For travel purposes the phones can be extremely useful.

That actually underscores another issue - companies who don't maintain their websites and/or don't pay attention to same. Its an epidemic. I always take a laptop when I travel - it has gotten me out of more than one sticky situation, all without having to deal with a PHOOOOOONNE!! ;) :D

You're reaching again, when I said "society as a whole" it did NOT mean "everybody" and stated as much, as you also pointed out. There are always going to be some that do not participate in what the rest of society does. I guess maybe I should have said the vast majority or most of the population so you could have better comprehended what was being relayed.

I wont deny the rest of your babbling because none of us that bother to watch what goes on in the world around us are ignorant of the fact that far too many people, particularly younger generations, are addicted to their smart gadgets or apps they're using, more likely.

No matter how much you insist there is no "need" for smart phones, it does not make it true in all aspects. Smart phones are needed for some jobs. One of the requirements of the contract mail route we have is a cellular phone. The need for a smart phone comes to bear when I am in areas without cellular service. A regular cell phone can not access internet to make WIFI calls. I haven't looked into whether or not a non smart phone can bluetooth to a satellite messaging device such as the Inreach mini or Zoleo. I might have to look into that. But I digress, You do you, I'll do me, and we'll all just keep on living the dream!!

I bring it as my life runs on email, plus I can find out local stuff, where to eat, etc, etc. Pretty much what most people use a smartphone for, but with a far better experience - AND more affordable. If I had a job that required me to be online in the field, it would be a laptop with a 5G card in it. As it is, I can use my flip as a hotspot and use my current laptop, although I've never felt the need when traveling. I've only used the hotspot capability when our AT&T Internet went down for 3 days. It was expensive, but it worked. I just made a couple or three email runs a day.

I can do all the things you listed significantly faster on my phone than I could on my laptop. Especially if I had to hot spot the laptop which I can.

The laptop only comes out if I need to use excel.

I could not, and wouldn't want to try. I *insist* on a REAL keyboard, REAL mouse, a REAL screen with at least a little bit of real estate, and running a REAL operating system with REAL software. That just boils down to expectations and what I'm not willing to put up with. Phones suck - and so do tablets with phone operating systems, even though they have more screen. I sure as Hell wouldn't want to do Internet or email on one - as I keep on saying, phones don't do much very well of the many things they can do - a jack of all trades, master of none. "Gerber/Leatherman" vs "real tools".

I know what a computer is, and a smartphone ain't it. Too crippled, too limited, too expensive.

This explains it all.

Had a guy that worked for me that hated the Mall of America. One day I asked him why he didn’t like it and eventually asked him how many times he’d been there. He said zero which made his opinion worth just as much.

That actually isn't always true. My Sonim can do that, although I've never needed to use it. It can be a WiFi hotspot too.

Now that you mention it, I've used Sonim's before. I was issued one when I was on the August Complex fire in N. CA. The fire team had brough in a AT&T portable cell tower but I have Verizon and they wanted me to submit all my fuel receipts for teams that charge to the fire digitally so I needed the Sonim as a hotspot.

It's getting harder and harder to find Sonim phones. AT&T only has one available with 5G and it's between $500 and $600 and yep, it's a smart phone.

Verizon only has the 4G flip with and without camera for $200 and the XP8 smart phone for $648

I wonder how much longer they're going to be available?

Nope, try again. Several years ago, I bought an Android tablet to see what all the hubbub was about. At that time, I tried Internet, email, etc, etc. No real keyboard etc, plus the small screen (still larger than any smartphone) made it a complete non-starter. Why would anyone want to contend with this sub-optimal setup? It was pretty good for watching Hickok45 videos in bed, I'll give it that.

I hate tablets. They are not the same even the apps are different.

Things have improved significantly over the last “several” years.

I bought mine direct from Sonim. Its my third ruggedized flip. It "drives" a bit on the odd side as EVERYTHING is "sticky", but its rugged credentials are unmatched. With that said, I had to send it back to Sonim because all the rubber on it was stretching out of shape - not impressed. I bought a $35 flip to use while the Sonim was gone, and even it has hotspot/WiFi calling, much to my surprise. Just got the Sonim back a couple or three days ago, am still moving back into it.
