Piss & Moan Table

Definitely other drivers fault. Son turns left off State Hwy heading south. Other driver is southbound doesn't stop and shoots across state highway hits my son several hundred feet south of the intersection. Admits fault. Police report backs it up.

ok, but none of that has anything to do with your original question or my questions to you. Your next step depends on which carrier you are going through.

When making a claim against your own carrier under collision, that's considered a first-party (no-fault) claim, so it doesn't matter who caused the accident, they have a contractual obligation to pay for the damages provided you have the coverage. This is why its easier to go through your own carrier.

When making a claim against the other carrier, that is a third-party claim, and fault is absolutely required for that claim. This is why dealing with the other driver's carrier is almost always more of a pain in the ass, some carriers will take their sweet old time 'investigating', while you're sitting around waiting and in some cases your car is sitting in a shop somewhere racking up storage charges.

Fuck that nonsense. Get it fixed and back on the road then worry about the rest, life is too short to dick around with this kind of thing.

And by way of disclaimer, always consult a local attorney to determine if there are any unique quirks to your state's laws, my comments apply in my state and while they're generally universal, sometimes there are state-specific rules and laws that alter things.

ok, but none of that has anything to do with your original question or my questions to you. Your next step depends on which carrier you are going through.

Our carrier is Erie. The At fault drivers carrier is State Farm.
I'm on the phone with my Carrier now.

toilets are fun :ROFLMAO: Ive done apt maintenance in the past..

about 6 years ago one of our toilets suddenly started not really flushing that well. It would flush, and liquids went down fine, but once you put any kind of solid or even toilet paper in it, it would slow waaay down as to be useless until I plunged it to death, at which point it would be ok for liquids again but the next time somebody went #2 it would have to be plunged again.

I snaked it from up top, and then backward from the cleanout in the basement, and couldn't get anything. It was a hall bathroom and we only had one kid at the time, who was still in diapers, and rarely any guests so I let it go on longer than I would have if it happened today, but finally I'd had enough and ended up pulling the toilet off the floor to find some ring shaped plastic toy, can't remember exactly what other than that my kid had been playing with it and apparently had flushed it. It was sized just large enough to wedge in above the wax ring and not go down, and depending on how it was oriented would either mostly block the passage, or block just enough of the passage as to let the snake right by and only be a problem for solids.

Now you had to mention snaking a drain.

Mrs App noticed a basement floor drain had backed up in our utility room Monday. I take a look at it and make an attempt at snaking it. It’s backed up, can’t see what’s going on.

I put 25’ of snake down the drain and hit nothing.

I have her call a plumber and they say they’d send a plumber out to snake it Tuesday morning for $100.

Plumber comes out and then they call me at work. He tells me that the drain also has the line from the kitchen sink running into it, so it’s the garbage disposal and dishwasher trash that was the problem. Ok, that’s good to know.

Then he says I need to decide what I want done.

He said to snake the kitchen line and then basement line it’d run us $1000. Or $500 for just the basement. Then he said we should have the lines jetted and he said on the phone that would be $15k.

When I heard $15k it soured me a bit. Ok, a lots of bits.

He planned on charging $50 for the visit. Again we were told $100 all inclusive.

I said put Mrs App back on the line

I asked if I was on speaker and she said no.

I said “tell him to get the fuck out of our house”

Apparently he heard what I said.

After I’m off the phone he said he’d talk to his manager and see if he could snake the basement for the original $100, including the visit.

She called me back and asked if that was ok. I said sure since that’s what we originally had him come to do.

He did, took him 20 minutes and everything flows fine now.

there’s some question on whether he accidentally said $15k and meant $1500 or not. But he did tell Mrs App they offer financing for it.

The local rental place has the jetters for $125/day or $375/week. I could take a class on plumbing for $750.

It still pisses me off thinking about it.

In hindsight since I didn’t know there was any other drain tied into the floor drain, I’m wondering if I snaked the wrong line and went up to the kitchen sink instead.

Now that it’s clear of water I know what to do next time.

Oh also, in a rental a few years ago the kids bathroom toilet was backed up. I plunged it so hard I blew out the wax seal. Had to pull the toilet. I ran a snake down it and pulled out a yogurt cup. One of the kids flushed it.

a few weeks ago there was a thread that was really hugging the nuts of tradesmen like they were inherently superior to the more educated. No doubt it's accurate in some situations but I'm still waiting for a plumber to show up at my house that can diagnose or correct an issue any better than me and isn't trying to screw me over. If anything he can probably execute a repair faster than I can, but he's got a head start with a van stocked with parts whereas I'm gonna end up making at least 3 trips to Home Depot at an hour each.

I have zero problem buying more tools. Home Depot is only a few minutes away.

But, I figured for $100 it’d be easier to have them do it. But then I’m told it’s going to be between $500 and $15k did not sit well with me.

For sure. There are definitely plumbing issues I would have happily paid $100 to fix to save me the time and the nastiness. They never seem to quote me numbers like that though.

Anyway due to lack of concern / help from my agent, the 35yr relationship is done.
I left SF after a 39 year relationship earlier this year - for much the same reason. They treat their customers like crap. It didn't used to be that way. The local agent was fine, it was corporate. Bye-bye!

Oh, and they'll want to "total" the truck. You heard it here first.

Had a similar problem years back - turned out it was an old metal vaselene jar lid. Goddess only knows how long it had been there - but it was just stuck at the toilet's discharge, pivoting back and forth.

Was it one of those fucking "We charge by the JOB, not the hour" type outfits? Avoid like the plague.

No, I heard her make the appointment it was a we’ll take care of the basement drain for $100. Then when they are in the house it’s now $500 minimum to do what they said they’d do for $100.

I believe it’s more like when a non car person gets their oil changed and ends up with a new air filter plus $30 install, a transmission flush, coolant flush and top off of the wiper fluid.

This happened in June. Don't think I've written about this story, figure this is a good thread for it:

So we were going on our yearly vacation, a cruise to Mexico. The morning of the cruise, my 9yo wakes us up early, "I think Leroy got sprayed by a skunk! He smells really bad!"

Leroy is 12yo (100lb golden doodle). We used to have a skunk problem at our old house. Previous dogs were sprayed multiple times until we started using bright lights in the yard at night and used some wire mesh to block off the section of the yard the dogs could get to. Never had a problem after that. Leroy never got sprayed at that house. We moved to a new house 4 years ago, about 2 miles away. Never seen a skunk in my yard or neighborhood. Smelled them a few times, but not all the time like the previous area. So the yard isn't at all 'skunk proof'.

So he managed to go 12+ years without getting sprayed. The misfit this dog is, waited until the morning we were leaving for vacation to get sprayed. THANKS A LOT LEROY!

Gave him a quick bath even though he's already stunk up the living room. House sitter will be showing up later. She's a saint, but don't want to leave her with a 'skunk dog'. Finish the bath. Lock him outside to dry off. 5 minutes later he's barking. Not his usual useless/boredom bark, he sees something. Skunk is still in the yard hiding behind a planter right next to the gate. Fine! Lock Leroy inside.

Go around to the outside, unlock and prop the gate open, about 2' from where the skunk is hiding. Grab the pool net (Lucky to have this handy), pole is probably 15' long. Start trying to coax the skunk out. He runs past the open gate to the other corner. Fuck me right? Able to coax him to the right, though now he stops in front of the open gate like he wants to spray me. I'm yelling at him by now. NO! NO! GO THROUGH THE FUCKING GATE YOU IDIOT! I back off. Luckily he turns and runs out the gate. I avoid getting sprayed and adding to the nightmare.

Back to another bath for Leroy.

Manage to get packed. Already running late. Get everyone out. Guess what? The car won't start! Try jump starting it, not happening. Wife calls her mother (40 min away). She was able to get us to the terminal. We made it on time.

Update on Son's rear-ended wreck.

Yesterday morning I called Erie Insurance claims and submitted a claim.

They asked if there was anything else I needed and I suggested they find me another agent that's willing to do their job as I'm considering leaving. They'll look into it.

At 11am there happened to be an adjuster in the are and he stopped by and wrote up the damage estimate. Sending the info to me and a local body shop.
And further stating that they will be mailing out a check later yesterday.

Yes they subtracted my $1000 deductable, which they will get back from State Farm in the coming months.

Thanks for weighing in @Westtown Willy !

that sounds more like it, glad it worked out. And by the way, as far as your old buddy goes, I’m sure you know this but agents are really just salesmen, their job is to get the customers in the door & sell insurance, & if they're doing their job correctly, fit the customer with appropriate coverages for their situation. When their customers make claims, it likely reflects poorly on them & their bottom line in some way, so steering you towards filing your claim with the at-fault driver’s carrier is par for the course. He’s a dick because if he was really your friend, that’s a grenade he should have dived on for you, it’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

He of course also has nothing to do with your claim being accepted, denied, or otherwise, wholly out of his hands, that’s all dealt with by a different part of the company through the adjusters assigned to the claim, they're often in different states & don't know your agent from Adam.

As an aside, it's been my experience that a great many insurance agents don't know what they're even selling. The implications of insurance coverages can be very complex, & understanding these things should be a threshold requirement for agents, however many don't understand the law on the back end and how it may impact your rights in the event of a claim. I've found this to be particularly true in one of the states where I practice, customers are given tort & other 'options', some of which can be horrendous in the event of an injury claim. The explanations given to customers when they're selecting from these options range from inadequate to flat out wrong. The customer doesn’t know this until the shit hits the fan & by then it’s of course too late, they can only change the policy from that point forward in the event of a future accident.

3 years ago during harvest another " State farm insured" passed my truck driver on the left while he was turning left. I don't carry full coverage on the hopper. His car was pinned under the hopper. No personal injury.
My other agent with another company did all the leg work finding that the "Insured" had bought this car and had been driving it for quite awhile but never transferred title to his name, never licensed or registered it either. Fortunately he did insure it. My agent even notified the previous owner who was shocked it was still in her name.
He'll likely be getting the rest of my business.
