Picking up where I left off

Condense that down to one word and I'll have my new middle name.
Blaine Hubris Johnson - "(in Greek tragedy) excessive pride toward or defiance of the gods, leading to nemesis."

You have defied the jeeper gods Metalcloak and Genright now your fall is imminent.

My first TJ was a 97 2.5L SE that eventually ended up with 4.88 gears and 33s. I daily drove it for almost 3 years before getting an 04 TJ Unlimited. Let me tell you, anything is an improvement after that, especially where engine power is concerned.

driving the 2.5L SE really made me appreciate the extra power of the 4.0L. I always like the idea of a v8, but when you read about the potential issues and need for custom tunes, parts, and programs, it turns me off to the idea. However, I do appreciate all the work and planning that some are able to do in order to get an LS or other engine in their Jeep.

Right now, reliability and parts availability is more important to me and If I ever need to swap a motor for whatever reason, I would rather have whatever gets me back on the trail/road faster. Maybe my opinion will change down the road when I have more time, money, and space.

The R2.8 is where I’m going when I replace this dog. Selfishly I wouldn’t mind seeing Chris do it just for more datapoints!
What transmission are you going to pair with it?

My bud with a R2.8 swapped YJ is running a 6L80 and loves it...

@Chris I keep telling you to go down to Desert Rat's "Coffee and Crawlers" - there are plenty of folk there with LS and Hemi swapped TJ, LJ and JKs. Get their opinions and see what issues they've had with the swap and integration. See what issues they had with reliability, how it was addressed, etc.

There are always folks trying to do V8 swaps on a "budget", which is certainly not how you take on a V8 swap if you want it to be trouble free. Thankfully, it's not 2002 anymore and the LS (and now the G3 Hemi) is a well-understood platform with tons of support.

Probably just have to stretch the wheelbase a bit and massage the firewall a little, no?
The 8HP90 is shorter than the 545RFE, so it isn't much longer than your 42RLE - plus most G3 Hemi mounts move the block forward a few inches. You may have some clearance considerations with your upper link mounts but shouldn't be ridiculous based on others that I've seen wedge G3's into LJs.

They have EGR and a catalyst. No dpf and no scr. They meet 1999 emissions standards.
Hmm, last I saw it was pre-OBD-II Fed standards, though Cummins Repower has been working with the EPA and CARB to get it approved for later year swaps... Where did you see the 1999 compliance??

I don't know of any LS swap that was done that did not have a range of issues that needed to be sorted, dealt with, trouble shot, and resolved over about a year's time after it was up and running.

They range from overheating, electrical issues, gauges not right, not running right, trans shifting like dogshit, etc.

If anyone knows of any individual who has nailed a swap in very short order and has a reasonably tolerable standard of how stuff should be, I would like to chat with them.

Be aware that I have nothing against LS swaps at all. I have lots of issues with doing something that takes so long to get dialed in or get left to be crappy and just put up with. That and most I know of don't make the AC work which ain't gonna fly in Chris's world.
I have full confidence that my LS swap will go smooth as butter. There won't be any complications or headaches and everything will work exactly as I want right out of the box. I mean I watched a few vids on YouTube... What can possibly go wrong? :ROFLMAO:

I've spent some time chatting with the folks that have one on those "adventure" type runs to the various places. They report that it was easy to tell who had an LS swap because they spent at least some part of every day with the hood up or getting others to go get parts. Based on that, I'm not sure what WON'T go wrong.

I mean this is one hell of a badass stroker:

Start adding things though and you can very easily get over $10,000.

That's my issue... 10k for a 4.0 stroker? Seems a bit nuts to dump that sort of money into a 4.0 in general. Of course it still ends up cheaper than a R2.8 swap, a V8 swap, etc., so maybe it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be (the price that is).

You can have a crate LS engine, full harness, ECU and 6L80 for not much more...

Right, but then you'll spend another 10-15k getting it in and doing it right.

Not to mention the issue with it interfering with the mid-arm upper link in the front. Also, since mine is a SWB, the transmission would likely end up being longer thus I'd need to stretch the wheelbase a bit to avoid a super short driveshaft.

The stroker has appeal because it's a drop-in replacement. Of course 10k for a 4.0 seems absurd when you say it out loud.
