Pentastar V6 in a TJ

The 2012-2014 3.6L V6 Pentastar engines had many issues with their heads which required several redesigns.
The head PN double letter identifier (revision) went from AA to AD before the problems were resolved.
When sourcing a Pentastar engine to install verify the engine is a 2014 or newer so you are not getting an engine with the head problems.

DIY vs them installing it? 22k seems insane to me but I guess that's cos I'm a DIYer.

Friends 2GR swap in MR2 was 18k I guess 😵‍💫

We know your ass cheeks couldn't pass a dollar bill you're so CHEAP....

This is into a JK/JL price but a TJ/LJ would be comparable I'd guess... But if you tried to source a Hellcat take out I'd guess you're at $12K minimum & you'd need a 4x4 8HP to go behind it since the Challenger won't work.

I so am. I have a friend and we always joke "ya don't pay off a house early spending money for X!!"

Holy moly that is expensive. They need to put a "spoiler" over those prices, no POORS allowed!!!

The 3.6 is not half bad. It was built for fleet use and it has been out long enough to have a very proven track record. It’s one of the last port injection engines so the injectors and manifold don’t get all gummy. I wonder how well the 3.6 and 8 speed packages in the tj. If it would allow for proper front suspension uptravel, a tummy tuck at least as good as stock drivetrain with a savvy skid, and a reasonable rear driveshaft length I think it would be an extremely compelling option.

Thanks, I knew some of them had issues. Still not sure I'd swap a V-6 over a V-8...

You can get close to that with a Hemi... You might need a slight drop skid like a 1" possibly a 2". The 8HP is a large transmission

If I were going to the trouble of swapping in that engine, I would probably do a JK tub & interior swap as well, so at least I could be comfortable while I sit and wait for a tow truck.

On the other hand, I can probably help you wire up your CEL to stay on all the time with your current setup. I can only assume that's what your end goal is.

Lots of tech info on the Allpar website, but couldn't find the actual weight of the 3.6L Pentastar. As an earlier poster stated . . . a 4.6L stroker with aluminum head . . . that sounds very interesting.

As to the color of my text . . . it, and many other color options are available to all on this fine website.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine weighs around 326 pounds (148 kg) depending on the application.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Weight: The engine weighs approximately 326 pounds (148 kg).

  • Design: FCA used a thin-wall strategy to reduce the nominal thickness of certain die-cast components, without compromising NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness).

  • Application Specific: The weight can vary slightly depending on the specific vehicle application.

  • Comparison to Previous Model: The new Pentastar is 4 pounds lighter than the previous 3.6-liter Pentastar, despite the addition of new components weighing 13 pounds.

    • Engine Type: The 3.6-liter Pentastar engine is a 60-degree V6 engine
    • Construction: It is constructed with a high-pressure, die cast aluminum block fitted with cast iron bore liners and aluminum cylinder heads.

I see endless problems on a Gladiator forum I look at. They have real valve train issues , but at least they are expensive . Sorry about your JKU , bummer !

the oil cooler has serious issues on them. its so ridiculous and if you dont catch it in time...blown motor. i have a aev jku350 that i paid $90k for and cant drive it lol. sits in a storage lot. my swap will be a om606 from mercedes (i work for them) with a dieselpunk intake plenum and pump.

Got a P06DD? Change the oil pressure sensor. (requires removing both layers of the intake).

Still got a P06DD? Change the oil cooler housing. (requires removing both layers of the intake). Pray you don't crack it in the process, since it's plastic, and we all know how well plastic holds up to heat cycling.

Still got a P06DD? Replace the oil pump hi/lo solenoid. What's that? No, they don't actually sell that solenoid separate from the oil pump. And whatever the strongest adhesive on earth is doesn't hold a candle to the adhesive they presumably mined off the tail of some comet to glue the upper half of the oil pan to the block, because when has a gasket ever worked in the history of automotive design? My favorite part of this job is actually a tie: (a) the fact that you have to remove the lower timing gear to get the pump out and (b) the near impossibiity of fishing the solenoid wires from the timing chain area through the block and back out the side.

Still got a P06DD? You and everybody else, my dude.

Of course all the Gladiators were built in 2020 and newer and have many VVT / rocker arm / cam issues. So take that with a grain of salt. the head casting may be okay , but it doesn't matter since the valvetrain isn't reliable.

I believe the company that's doing the V-6 swap decided to reuse the giant pile of engines they were removing from JKs, JLs, and JTs and see if they could sell em.

-Mac

Hadn't thought about that.... But good point.... They'll sell you some Dana 44 Rubicon axles too from a JK/JL/JT...
