Hi folks. Have researched this, but need a bit of advice.
Jeep: 2004 Rubicon on 35’s, 5:33’s w/ 42RLE. 88,000 miles. Trans Serviced about 10 months ago, pan dropped and filter changed. Trans seems to shift fine with the occasional momentarily search at very low speed at a down shift to say 1st, but have had that with all of these I’ve owned. Jeep has thrown this code twice in the last ten days on the interstate getting up to speed (60) in extremely high winds (40 plus). No other times. Took Jeep to local very trusted Transmission shop and I guess you need another code reader for the tranny and they are getting a code regarding torque converter lock up. They are are going to drop the pan on it today. I’ve read the posts about possible wiring issues and just thought I would ask you experts what your thoughts are? Oh yea, I’ve installed a Speedo Healer on it if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any insight.
 
It is possible it is a failing torque converter- a good scanner or scanner/picoscope combo will show that. My 05 LJR with 5:13 gears and 35’s did it at 60,000 miles.
 
That generic transmission code could mean anything. Hard to believe a "transmission shop" doesn't have the proper code reader. My wife's 42rle had that code and shifted fine..............until it didn't. I drove it one night and it started whining, then stopped shifting, then just stopped. Had chunks of metal in the pan.

Thanks. They called this morning. They do have the correct scanner. Probably needs a complete rebuild, but they are going to try a couple of solenoids first. Rebuild is about 4K

Sounds just like my story-

I went ahead and did a transgo kit, billet t/c and billet shift pistons.

If I could prove that turning the overdrive off would reduce slippage and extend the life of these I would really encourage people to do the overdrive mod-

I’m just not deep in transmission knowledge.

There's a solenoid that controls the lockup, I would replace or at least test that before I did a whole rebuild. And I would further verify the integrity of the wiring on that circuit. It would be surprising to me that failing to lock up would require a rebuild, because the action is almost completely in the valve body. And a typical rebuild doesn't do much beyond cleaning out the VB.

I don't work in a transmission shop, but I would venture a guess that 95% of rebuilds are just replacing soft parts like piston seals & frictions. For a rebuild to fix a lockup issue it would have to be bad sealing rings or bushings, which can happen but I feel like it would be the outlier. Torque converter, solenoid, or wiring would be my first 3 guesses. Of course changing the TC is more than half of the effort toward a rebuild anyway...
