Hello,

I own a red TJ and so far I have taken it 4 times to the mechanic because the engine light won’t go off. A couple months ago I had a blinking engine light and I brought it in to the mechanic and he said it was the crankshaft and that’s what was causing the problem. Then the light came back on right after picking up my car. I figured after that he wasn’t sure how to fix this issue and maybe wasn’t familiar with my Jeep Wrangler. I found my codes off the car which are: P0016, U(?)0168 and, P0516. I am past my inspection and need to get this resolved. Any advice? I’ve looked into the codes as well.. have any knowledge to share? Thank you 😊

What year is your TJ? P0016 sounds like your OPDA wasn't installed at TDC or is somehow out of position- a timing issue. P0516 refers to the battery temperature sensor, and isn't a big deal-either the sensor failed, fell off, or is disconnected. The U0168 is outside my scope of experience.

Welcome!

First, please complete your vehicle details in your profile so we know what we're talking about. If your CEL is still flashing, you should avoid driving it until you can solve the issue.

I do the majority of my own work, but if I didn't, I'd consider two options: go back to the original mechanic and get them to continue to troubleshoot, or ask here for known competent mechanics in your area (tag your post with your state) and take it there instead.

If you're willing (and have the time) to do some of your own work, grab your year factory service manual (FSM) and parts list PDFs from here.

I also like this site for OBDII code troubleshooting: https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/ because it's written for any vehicle and can often provide additional clues.
