Operation Phoenix

Ordered a Tom Woods driveshaft on Tuesday. Arrived Thursday. 42 1/8" just about an inch longer or so than my previous Adam's shaft. Figured I might get away with it when I pushed the transfer case up...but no.

Drove it for a few days and it was much smoother. I beat the crap out of that front shaft...has some pretty good witnesses marks.

Guessing since my Dana 30 pinion seal is leaking the wobbling shaft might have caused my 231J issues. Certainly didn't help.

Pulled the diff cover to play with the e-locker. Found three teeth in the bottom of the housing. E-locker is kinda working... pulled more wire into the housing to let the stator assembly rotate more freely.

Pulled the Lube Locker off. All the bottom silicone traces fell off. Sealed it up with Right Stuff and pumped it full of Lucas 85w140 after replacing the pinion seal.

Those teeth have probably been off for a while. I don't think I've opened it up since I did the regear. It'll be fine until I get my credit card down from the giant crater I made doing an outboard.

Probably will order 5.13s for the front and back too...cause why the hell not.

Was able to bolt up the new shaft without dropping the skid...body lift is convenient and years of contorting myself working on cars has taught me a few skills.

Hard top and door probably going on this afternoon. Raining steady outside.

Spent the last couple of days adding a side shed to the shop to park the lift and tractor so as not to clutter up my shop space for parking. Going to pick up some IBC totes and move the goat's alfalfa out there too.

Damn....
Sorry to hear about the busted teeth.,,,,, Know how it feels BTW... You could always go to a bigger front axle? Any idea when or how you busted those teeth?
Is there a larger axle in your future?

I keep wondering if my HP44 is going to survive those 38's I've got... But a Dana 60 just isn't in my cards.. Unless I could sell my HP44 for enough to help offset the Dana 60.

I know you do 95% of your own wrenching but do you know you to setup gears? Have the tools?

Happy with the Dana 30. Odds are I busted those teeth a long long time ago and ran the Rubicon Trail twice and Moab down three teeth.

If I went with a bigger axle I'd want bigger tires.

I want this to stay Dana 30 and 35s. I do anything else and it'll be on another rig... probably a TJ.

Got all the tools and a press. Could easily swap to 5.13s in an afternoon. Lift will make it much easier than previous efforts rolling around on my back on gravel. Probably would reuse everything...90 percent positive I could pop everything back in with existing shims and get a decent pattern.

While many say it's not needed the only thing I'd add to your tools would be a case spreader... While they used to be fairly expensive you can now pick one up for $100 or close to that on Amazon.

As far as axles go I agree that if you're staying on 35" or smaller what you've got will work. And I'll guess you'd be pretty happy with 5.13 gears.

I've ran axles with busted teeth before too and they lasted until I could afford to replace them. When you get ready to do the gears if you need a hand let me know... I have my own home to lay in if needed... Just need a spot to park it & power too hook to.

Edit: I should add if you decided you wanted a hand I've got a case spreader... Plus other tools for doing gear setup.

Why though? What does one do with that?

We have a pet theory some of our more aspiring crackheads/methican americans/unhoused folks are "banking" cars in the woods. If they need to cash out they carve off another chunk and scrap it. Might keep them from being asked for a title.

Mac - not many TJ owners store their other doors on another TJ. Now that's a classy door rack! :ROFLMAO:

Also, you posted your photos in reverse chronological order. Was that for @Kiwi TJ down there on the bottom side of the earth? :ROFLMAO:

I was gonna say, what do you mean 'reverse' looks fine to me from down here haha
