Not sure, but I would suspect the older tops are made of the same SMC material as the lid on my '05 LJ. If that's the case, be sure to get the proper repair materials. If the repair products are not rated for use on SMC, you'll likely have further issues with anything you "fix".
Having watched exactly one video of a kid fixing his JK top, he used this stuff. If there is a specific SMC product, I'm not seeing it. But your post was the first I had ever heard of SMC, so ignorance is a real factor here.

A quick Google of smc and polyester gets a bunch of info.
I was in the same boat. Found a hard top for $500. It needed a bit of work. Probably spent $200 repairing and painting. Decided I really didn’t like a hard top after all. Sold it for $700. The labor was fun and interesting so despite the labor and driving two hours to pick it up I felt it was break even ish.
Come to think of it, the left over fiberglass made the plastic brittle engine hood cover on my lawnmower repair fabulous.

For those interested, figured I should post the products I'm using in the event anyone else here is looking to tackle repairs on a hardtop or anything else. Our Jeep hardtops are made from SMC fiberglass, which makes some commonly available repair materials incompatible. If you use the wrong resin or filler, your repairs will fail. The fillers and resins listed below are all clearly noted as being SMC-compatible, and serving as your lab rat, I can confirm they are.
