New TJ day! Now with added transmission failure pics!

I mentioned it in my NSS/TCC thread, but found some great "choices" made by the PO, including installing the TCC passthru connector backwards. Found cracked wires on the NSS on the wires for backup lights & NSS function, so I'm wondering if we had backup lights on whenever we were in Park or Neutral. It only drove in Reverse when we picked it up so I'm certain we didn't notice. Then one of the TCC wires inside the transmission was obliterated, so that plus a new solenoid should resolve the P0743. Side effect of the new solenoid is that I was able to correct the passthru connector and basically restore the wiring to factory. In this one 6" section of harness, anyway.

Transmission going back in tonight, with any luck she'll drive (forward) under her own power today.

You going to deloom the transmission/transfer case harness and inspect since you're in a good position to do so and have already found bad stuff?

As the nerd in the group who does nerd things like using a torque wrench, anti-size, and wire loom, I have suggested this. However, we're under some time pressure because it is currently immobile at a 3rd friends's garage and we need to get it driving asap before he feels wife pressure.

So I would suspect we are not going to be doing that. The good news is that it started up as-is, so at least the NSS function works, meaning we have a minimally viable product currently.

SHE LIVES!!

got the transmission all installed and buttoned up, and witnessed it drive forward under its own power for the first time in who knows how long. It’s on 35’s with 4.56 gears and man does it like to go.

A week ago I was the idiot who bought a non driving jeep. But in 6 calendar days, 12 hours of actual effort, and $156, we now have a fully functioning jeep.

BING BONG!

Never doubted your ability to get it going!!!!!!!

Way to go!!

You have more confidence than me then! I got a little concerned when I started seeing evidence that somebody else had been inside this transmission before…like, why did I think I could fix what others before me couldn’t? And I guess the jury needs to remain out, the clutches I took out didn’t burn up overnight. And of course when you can’t road test a car before you buy it, it’s a pure dice roll, but a quick test drive last night and I think we’re in great shape.

We did have a brief freak out moment when it would turn over but not start. Great, is it my turn to start a crank/no start thread? But no, we forgot to install the crank sensor. Whoops!

In putting the transmission back in, I may have figured out why we’re getting o2 sensor codes. Both downstream sensors are unplugged, and I don’t immediately see where they plug into. So I have that to look forward to.

And next: BING BONG, TONZ AND FODEEZ!

🙂

Nice work!

Not parting out either of them. Just gonna turn this one into a greatest hits and the other into mostly b-sides.

I thought you were taking the top, doors and axles out and giving it remnants so it could be resold? I guess I misunderstood it's xj guys tj that is getting leftovers?

that was an early plan, but things changed quickly. He’s keeping the new one, selling a downgraded version of his old TJ. Plus some other swaps with my daughter’s.

Truly parting out was never in the cards. Too much time, and I hate seeing a good one torn apart like that.

Quick update since somebody caused this one to show up in my alerts.

all my threads about electrical troubles are about this jeep. It's running, but evap, 02, and TCC codes. And fuse #11 keeps blowing. And it's making a noise that we think is in the torque converter. When I did the rebuild we kept the existing TC because well, we were selling it. But then we decided not to so... As luck would have it, I had a brand new TC from when I rebuilt my daughter's that I ended up not using because I couldn't get it to seat. And then I never returned it. Her trans didn't need a rebuild, but since I had to pull the pump to replace the seal I figured why not replace the frictions too. So the TC should be fine.

Problem is I'm a bit of a slob in my garage. For no good reason, I still have the TC's off the 3 cores I'm sitting on. I have the TC from the AW4 I did. I have the TC from my original rebuild. I have the TC from that muddy mess of a 999 I rebuilt for that one rando. And what's worse is XJ Buddy pulled "a torque converter" out of my garage while I was out of town so I have no idea which one he now has. You should know by now that none of what I just wrote will slow him down in the least. Everybody needs a friend who won't let obstacles stop his progress. Sometimes it means dumb things happen, but most of the time it means stuff gets done. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
