Nashville TJ's Build - Continued

That was my first thought. Years ago a friend of mine had a car with straight cut gears in his transmission, and the gear whine was very prominent. Short trips, it was exciting, but I imagine any time in the car would drive you crazy.
The only experience I have with straight-cut gears is from my racing days. The distinctive whine of F1 cars is from the straight-cut sequential gear boxes used to keep the weight down. Imagine driving for two hours to a destination with that noise!

Matt from Matt's Offroad Recovery ran a straight cut gear transfer case in his XJ, The Banana, for a while, but swapped it in short order due to noise. And that is almost exclusively an off road vehicle. It was crazy loud even going slow.

Not that I've every heard of. I don't know that there's anyone who offers a R&P straight cut. At least not anymore.

Yeah it would be a race car only thing for sure. But it would be stronger.

Monster trucks went with planetary hubs to make axles survive. I haven't seen any aftermarket planetary add-ons, but there have been a several big builds using AxleTech axles with planetary hubs.

Portals help in the same way but come with other issues.

I like it. Are you going to be applying any stains/colors? A little shading to make that flower 'pop'?

Colt - Here is a direct comparison as to the difference the finish makes on the "pop" of the carving - in the exact same light. Almost to the end on this one.

You're and AWESOME Grandpa....

Thanks Rick.

This is the sixth one I've made, and these things will certainly outlast me. I like to believe that my grandkids will grow old with these, and that the toy boxes will be a special way for them to remember me given that I've actually laid my hands on them.

Thanks Rick.

I've have a Hope Chest that my grandfather made for my grandmother when they got engaged in the 1930's. It's one of things I'll treasure and my daughter will get it when I'm not here anymore.

Too bad you broke the lid off :(
