You can test the motor without the solenoid. You can also ohm check the motor. I'd at least pull and inspect the brushes.

No need to spend more than $500 for a great lightly used Warn.
Test your motor without solenoid and if works, great. If not you can decide if worth taking apart and learning something or toss and buy a nice Warn.
Never too old to learn. D
