Mid Size Trucks

Then of course we need our bigger trucks (Dodge diesel) to haul our equipment.

I had two first gen Tacomas. One was a red 98 and one was a black 01. Both very reliable trucks. Things rattle, the ride is rough, the interior is junk, the seats kill your back and ass, and the transmission shifter jiggles around like a giant dildo; but that engine, transmission, and transfer case will never let you down. I had that black one for 4 years and drove and wheeled all across the country with it a few dozen times. Sold it with 270k.

In the mid 90s I had a Nissan Hardbody SE V-6 that I loved and beat to within an inch of its life on a regular basis. Flying through the air, blasting across mud and climbing hills. Not much love for them but I would take another in a heartbeat if I could.

I’m team Ridgeline... if you are a weekend project guy that commutes with the pickup it’s the clear winner. Looks aside, it can basically hang with payloads and tow almost as much as the mid sized. You get a ride with independent suspension and Honda space ergonomics.

Not for everyone, but if you haul some mulch or gravel a few trips a year and maybe need a pickup for an apt move the ridgeline checks the boxes.

Picked this up yesterday. 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS crew cab 4x4 with 6.5ft bed. Only 70k miles on a 4.8 liter. I consider it a midsize any more. It will still tow 10,000 lbs set up properly and it’s not to big for parking lot spaces. It now makes my Jeep a fun toy!!!!

My neighbor is a Chevy mechanic and absolutely loves his 2015 Chevy Colorado, but it’s really close in size to the 1500.

My dad had an Nissan hard body and he put over 300k on that thing. We changed one fan belt and changed the oil every 5000 miles and that’s it. I currently have a 2015 Xterra pro4X and for what you get for the money it can’t be beat. Plus it pretty quick. It would smoke the 12 Tacoma that I had with more leg room. Nissan had quietly been making a very good mid size truck the whole time. I don’t remember any huge Frame recalls or anything. They don’t get the best MPG though. 18 MPG is all I get but it’s worth it for the Power to weight ratio.

I have a 2017 Colorado. Pretty nice truck, though its tough to call it a "mid-size" anymore. This is my first smaller truck and so far, Its done everything I've asked of it. I know I won't be able to go grab my Dad's Kubota and equipment trailer, but really, I don't do that often anyway. I also can't go get 3 yards of topsoil anymore...but again, then number of times I need to do that are very limited. What I DO need to do is haul mulch, or a few 2 x 4's or some shelving project, or my bikes or a couple pieces of furniture for my wife to re-finish. It does that with ease. Bonus, it actually fits in my garage (which is why I moved away from a full size in the first place).
