Making my own hand throttle kit

You’re going to be moving the throttle as much as you want to with one of those

Basically you’re creating an agricultural throttle

I’m not saying you can’t figure out a fixed position either way but I don’t know that you’d want to do that
Might give it a shot, here in the summer it gets hot, would be nice to ramp the throttle up some to keep the jeep cooler ,and not have the(old lady) burn up while I’m running in somewhere (lol)
Choke cable’s moved the choke assembly and not the accelerator linkage like these

Make your handle long to make using it easier.

Here is mine made from an old 10 speed bicycle friction shifter I had in my pile of bike parts. I upgraded the 10 speed to a flat bar 14 speed with a granny gear for hills.

I run it with my index finger and thumb when my hand is on the shifter. First gear is tight and don't pull the Jeep out of gear messing with it.

At Moab, in 4lo, 1st gear, I could do everything I tried by setting the RPM and leaving it along while driving. Usually 2300-2500 RPM and goose the pedal if needed. But I never did. It didn't take more than a couple hills to guess the RPM needed before starting. Then clutch and brake were free to operate, but barely needed.

If I had a Rubicon transfercase that would be nice for climbing with my more streetable gearing. But the mid trails at Moab (TOTW, Fins, Hells) were no issue on the first couple days learning with this setup. I'd never been offroading with the Jeep before then.

Ha, I just noticed some Moab dust in the cracks. You find that stuff everywhere.

I wonder if someone could use an old hand choke cable assembly?

That is basically what I did, although what I used *is* intended as a hand throttle:

It works well for a trail jeep, I really like it. With that said, the cable isn't as flexible as a bike cable would be as it has a solid interior wire. That necessitated use of a bell crank:

I haven't actually wheeled with it yet so I was wondering if it might be better to mount it somewhere solid instead.

When I had a stick and a hand throttle, the most common use was to be able to apply some gas (and clutch) without releasing the brake.
There are times on the trail when you absolutely do not want to roll backwards (or forwards).

Me too. That’s absolutely the only reason I used it. You don’t need to rev the engine to winch.
